  • series 2 and 3 carrier question

I have been seeing some confusing info. I was under the impression the 3.23 an lower gears ratios had series 2 carriers and the 3.42's and up had series 3 carriers. but I just saw on another GM forum that someone looked up in the jegs catalog and it said that 3.08 and lower were series 2 and 3.23 and up were series 3. which is it? I would really like to know since my 3.4L has 3.23's and I was going to buy a whole rear. if I just need gears and a LSD I would much rather go that route.

3.23s and numerically higher gears are series 3.
3.08s and numerically lower gears are series 2.

All 3.4s have 3.23s, and thereforce a series 3 carrier.

You say "gears and a lsd" instead of a whole rear. If a 3.8 has 3.08s with a series 2 carrier, there is no need for a new rear end...just gears and a new diffy. The only things that the "series" affects are the gears and the differential.
