• A few trans issues (shifter troubles)

    I have a 105K 3.4 A4.

It used to be that occasionally, I'll have trouble pulling the shifter out of park and into drive when the car was cold.

Now, EVERY time the car is cold, I have trouble pulling the shifter from park to drive. Its like I have to pull hard, and when it releases, the whole console snaps up from the force of it. Any idea what this could be.

Also, how often should I change my trans fluid? I've never changed my trans fluid before. I don't think its been changed since when I bought the car at 82K. Should I change it myself or get it flushed? Thanks guys!

The shifter problem sounds like the shifter itself. It may just need to be cleaned.

As to the tranny fluid, ideally it should be changed around every 50,000 miles or so, but the will vary depending on how hard you run it, what kind of fluid you're using, if you have an extra cooler, etc.

At 100K, you might as well get it flushed now, it shouldn't cost too much, and it's relatively easy.

I recently had the same problem. I spilt coke all over the shifter and never cleaned it the way i should. Whne it got cold it did the same thing as you describe. Just take the center console out and clean that whole thing up with some soap and water. Worked for me

Just clean it eh? Sounds like a plan to me, I'll be sure to do this in a few months when the weather warms up (I *HATE* working on my car in the cold)

        Thanks again
