  • What the 3.4L v6 should really be in...

    Hi all,

I've been researching the 3.4L v6 for several months and I have finally started my own 3.4L swap. But you see guys, it's not in a camaro. It's in a 2200lb Miata!!! I have purchased a cam and lifter kit as well as underdrive pulleys. I have also purchased a set of hooekr headers (originally for a Jeep with a 2.8L). These have been jet hot coated. The exhaust will consist of true duals that are going to be 3" from the headers to the tail of the car. I will use dynomax bullet style mufflers and 2-way cats. A 225 lph pump will eventually be installed...

check out my site guys and tell me what you think... Thanks a lot

i was curious to know what you guys think the car will run in the quarter. By the way, I am using an 88' s-10 bell housing (for the location of the slave) with an older camaro t-5 tranny and my stock rear end (with 4.10:1 gears)

i guess with 1000 lbs less to work with the 3.4 might get ur miata movin pretty quick. In the f-bodies they definitely arent that quick, but the power/weight ratio is certainly in ur corner. Looks pretty impressive though, quite a challenge to complete and id be curious to know how it runs when completed.

I read why u chose the engine, but im still curious why u didnt try and find a newer or more powerful 4 cylinder instead? I dont think they would be that expensive. I mean it is cool that u chose a larger engine that normally has no place in a miata (BTW ur friends v8 is also impressive for this reason) but for speed and value i would have tried to get one of those older DSM motors-I cant remember the lettering but the ones from the older eclipses which can allegedly handle over 600hp with minimal internal work. So im just curious why the 3.4 and not a turbo 4 cylinder?

The eclipse engine that you speak of is the 4G63. This engine is actually VERY tall. The reason why it has not been used in a miata before is simply because you'd need an ugly hood just to cover the valve cover of the engine. On the other hand, I did pick up the 3.4L for VERY cheap ($150) from a buddy of mine (28K miles but it hada blown head gasket). Also, the 60 degree layout allows me to play around with the exhaust setup (this is where the 3.8, 4.3 and v8 guys have limitations, they also end up snaking it around the lower a-arms).

BTW, did you guys check out my chevy camaro SS ram air hood? PRetty cool huh?

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys.
