Hey guys, I'm not sure if I posted about this before but somebody on www.f-bodyhideout.com said that he was going to weld his...(axles? gears?) together to have a posi rear end. I was going to buy an LS1 rear end but if I can do this for free I want to. Can anyone explain to me how this works? Or if it is a good idea?
Thanks
Rob

NO!!!! im not even sure how it would successfully be accomplished, but assuming it can, it would be a horrible idea. you want each wheel to be able to turn independantly or you could get yourself into some major trouble on the road.

it does work to some degree. it will make the rear into a spool, not a posi.
a posi/limited slip works by allowing teh tires on teh two sides to turn at a little bit different rate when cornering, but has enough hold force internally to push with both wheels in a straight line.
welding the spider gears on an open diff will permanently lock teh two sides together. that means that when you go around a corner teh inside and outside tires are both rolling at the same rate, even though they are covering different distances. this is hella bad for street driving. it puts a ton of strain on teh axles and will wear your tires quickly. also, turning in wet conditions becomes mroe hazardous.
jsut buy a posi, they are only $100 from SLP and you don't have to risk a bunch of other parts.
You need the differential, gears, and the install kit

You should already have lsd, since you have a y87 car. You can double check the RPO codes on the door for G80 I think.
