I went for an oil change yesterday, and when the guy went to check my diff fluid, he said the seal was leaking pretty bad. I've had the car less than four years, and this is the second time it's happened. The first time was about a year or two ago, and the car was still under warranty.
Has anyone else had this problem? It is just my bad luck to get two bad seals, or could it be a result of driving habits or wear & tear?
I've had the same problem. They repaired my differential about 2 weeks ago. It was the pinion seal. Is the same seal leaking on your car? I hope mine doesn't start leaking again. Is this a widespread problem? I've heard of some of the LS1 guys having rear end problems but then again their engines put out 300 horses and they use slicks at the track.
The first time I had the seal repaired, the dealer's repair invoice stated that it was the pinion seal. I don't know if it's the same this time. I'll have to wait until I actually get it fixed to find out for sure.
I've had mine replaced at around 50k miles....it was pretty damp when i bought the car used, so i just went and get it fixed.
Its been about 7k miles so far and its been good, and i beat on the car at times :D who doesnt.
Only thing i can suggest is that they put the seal on wrong not really sure. Guess you just have to replace it again (try a different mechanic) and see what happens from there.

I had the same thing happen to me at 90,000 miles. I haven't had a problem since then. From what I've heard it seems to be a common problem on our types of cars. You could always try getting a different rear differential cover. They are supposed to be stronger and give more support to the rear end and reduce the chance of leaks, etc by distributing the various pressures, temps across more solid piece.

The rearend could also be over-filled. I've been told by two people that if the rear-end is over filled, or after it gets hot, and the fluid expands, the fluid level will go above the bottom of the pinion seal, and will weep out.

You can't overfill it. You fill it till it starts coming out the hole you're pouring the fluid into. So that's kinda hard to overfill. FYI that hole is higher the bottom of pinion seal.
