  • Clutch going bad...Please Help

My 95 3.4L Camaro has a Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch that was installed in August 2000 with 62,000 miles on the car. It now has 89,000 miles, that's 27,000 on the clutch. I thought such a heavy duty clutch would last a long time. Is 27,000m considered long? What's happening is the last time I had the clutch put in, they replaced the rear main and cam seal to stop oil leakage. Now in January I noticed oil drips on the driveway. About the same time the clutch started wining really loud in the morning when the pedal was pushed down. The noise went away after a few minutes of driving. I now realize that the oil leak probably dripped onto the clutch and when you drive the car a little, the oil gets burned off and it no longer squeaks. Some mechanics have told me it might be just a throwout bearing and not an entire new clutch. But the clutch pedal engages/disengages really close the the top of the resting pedal position(furthest from the floor, when the clutch pedal is just normal) you barely have to push in the pedal to shift. My friend got a SPEC Stage 1 installed in his 98 Mustang GT 4.6 and it shifts near the floor, the second you start to lift your foot up after pushing it in. So my question is: do I need a new clutch and if I do is there any other ones out there besides stock or another Centerforce? What is the size of the 5-speed clutch(i.e.-LT-1's use 11"x1-1/8"x26)

my clutch makes a screetching noise on cold mornings too, but a mechanic told me it was probably a dry throw out bearing. Its been like that for a yr and a half now and still drives fine so I guess i'll save my money and leave it, but that could be the same problem you are having. My clutch always seems to grab at the same time no matter what tho. Maybe your tob is about shot?

If your rear main goes, it will almost definatly leak some on your clutch, it only takes a few drops,

need4speed, im sorta glad to hear what you said about a dry tob, cause my clutch and tob only have 300 mils on them and in the mornin when everythign cold, it screetches a little, but goes away after an hour or so.. did you mechanic tell you to replace it?

he didn't really say anything about replacing it, but i wanted to because i thought it sounded horrible and was going to cause more damage. It's been working fine tho the way it is and it's been that way over a year. I'm not leaking oil from the rear main either, so it is probably the tob just is dry enough that it does that only when cold.

its not a huge job to replace the rear main, its something you just should do whenever you have your flyhwheel off.. cause for the 14$ for the seal, its not worht the hundreds for a new clutch
