i know its prolly been asked before, but will my gas mileage drop significantly if i get these gears? im somewhat concerned now that the gas price sky rocketed.
also, would i notice an actual difference between my stock rear end (3.23 open differential) and 3.42 gears with LSD? or should i just make the jump to 3.73 rear end with LSD?

If you want to get lots better acceleration, get 3.73's. the lsd will help you get traction and reduce your 60' times by maybe 2/10's. if you are worried about gas prices, get taller/wider tires. I'd say get vette rims that are 18x10.5 in back with 295-45-ZR18 meats on them. the stock diameter of 235-55 wheels on 16" rims is 26.1771. the new diameter w/ vette rims and huge meats is 28.4527. You, of course, will need either a jet scu or a HPP3 to correct the speedo to the new gears and meats.
I would just go to 3.73s right away. 3.42s over 3.23s will not be worth the money. Mileage will go down some. Taller tires will reduce the overall gear ratio. 3.73s show 2/10 gain in 1/4 over 3.42s. LSD helps alot with traction.
I went from 3:23 to 3:42 in my M5 and am happy, but regretful of not going with 3:73.
Like Dom said, it's not worth the money.
...unless you absoloutely don't want to chance bad mileage if you're a highway driver but would like improved acceleration.

what does LSD stand for and what does it do? i'm thinking i want to upgrade to 3.73 too. if i'm reading correctly, i'll have to get my speedometer adjusted?
The most common version is the $99 unit from SLP that is made by the folks at Zexel Torsion. Without getting into details - both tires spin when you launch. Not just one.

Does anybody with these gears know what the drop in fuel economy actually is with 3.73s? I do some highway, but mostly city. I mean, is it 'V8 bad' or 'big block bad'?

To adjust your speedometer, SLP makes a processor that adjusts it, its $160,P/N 63008, if anyone knows of anything cheaper, tell me about it...i wouldnt mind saving a lil money!!! :D
I personally can't speak from experience but am planning on doing a 3.73 rear myself. I do approx. 80% of my driving around town and don't anticipate mileage dropping much, if any, in the city. Mileage is based on the RPMs that you run at. Lower RPMs mean better mileage. Usually cruising at 35 - 45 I now use 4th gear but with 3.73s will probably be in 5th at almost the same RPMs so no loss in mpg.

Will Someone PLEASE already Install 3:73 into their 5 Spd 3.8 and give a detailed account of the gains/losses :)
I personally am kicking myself in my own shins for not going with 3:73 (I did the 3:42 and I know I woulda had no trouble going further).

im definately doing it.. its just that i wouldnt be able to install it myself. or would i be able to? i heard that EVERYTHING has to be PERCISE or it will wine and grind up the teeth in the gears.. how much would a rear end job cost?

its one of those things that has to be done precise, yet can be done with a socket wrench and a sledge hammer...go figure
i got my 3.42s off a buddy for 25 bucks, it's worth it to throw them in and see how i feel about them, and maybe go to 3.73 later.
i talked to james (12 sec), he said he's yet to hear of one of those Slp recalibrators working.
Friend of Mine (SeanC97) Just got his installed.. We are going to the track on Wednesday.. He had a 97 Ms w/ 3.23.. Now he has the 3.73 LSD..
I am sure he will post up..

someone said something about getting the computer reprogrammed for $160 by buying a unit off of slp. well i went to the chevrolet dealership and they'll do it for $55...of course you don't get to keep the computer programmer...but sheesh, how many times you going to need one of those? anyway, just thought you might want to know.
