Well with tax returns just around the corner this is on my mod list for this spring. I have 308s and i cannot handle the intense excitement they provide, my body starts convulsing while i drive due chemical meltdowns in my brain so im giving them up for either 342s or 373s. but really, i cant decide what ones to get, i dont wanna rev to high at highway speeds, nor do i wanna have a low topend...but i also dont wanna pay all the money for 342s and end up wishing i got the 373s.....so let me know from those who have or those who dont on whats the better choice

What other mods do you have? If you don't have any modifications to your car do not do 3.73's they kill the top end on stock 3.8. 3.42 give you a decent low end and a decent top end, I'd go with them. If I had a V8 3.73's hands down.2000 Firebird. Whisper Lid, True duals, TSP mail order tune, Built Tranny , TCI 2800 stall verter, B&M tranny cooler, Eaton LSD, 3.42 gears. Im getting 3.73's for my bird soon. Im also going to get a Z28 rear end that one of my buds is selling me. I dont go on the highway a lot so i dont seeing it being much of a problem. And the 3.73's will give me a big boost. Right now i have 3.23's stock. So i figured i would not feel a whole lot of difference if i got 3.42's. So 3.73's sounds good to me.1997 Firebird M5
Bright Red
Mods: SLP Intake, Autometer A/F Gauge, Magnaflow CatBack Exhaust, BMR STB, Cragar SS rims W/ Nittos on front and BFG drags on back

Stock Dyno Numbers: 170hp and 210lbs TQ

What exactly are your plans for the car? Do you have any mods currently, and what do you have planned? Are you gonna keep the car N/A or run forced induction at some point? Do you drive a lot on the highway or is it mainly street?
I wanted 3.73s since I've gotten my car, but then realized like 80% of my driving is on the highway, so 3.42s honestly make the most sense for me. Plus since I'll be spraying soon, a common consensus is to have 3.42s for that since they arent as steep.AIM: Alientr8tr
1998 Camaro 3.8L
Flowmaster 80-series, !FRA, Eibach Springs, KYB AGX, SLP sway bars, 3.42/LSD, Wings West kit, Z06 Motorsports, Silverstone Metallic paint
Shift 5 - My Band

basically the difference between 3.42's and 3.73's during normal driving is a few hundred rpm at most. if y0ou rock the highway at like 75 it is only around a 350rpm difference. there is also no real effect on mileage between the 2 sets, at least nothing more that a tenth or two to teh gallon.
at teh track teh better torque multiplication created by the 3.73's is worth 1.5-2. tenths normally.
i can't see why anyone would want 3.42's when 3.73's are quicker, don't hurt mileage, and cost teh same to install.

Well im thinkin the 342s beacause they seem like a good all around gear since i do tend to drive on the highway. But i have 308s now and was told by a friend i prob wont notice a big difference? Is this true. i dont wanna get them and be disapointed. Id like to get the 373s, but driving distance is an issue....
The car is stock for now, till i find the "right" exhaust.. and maybe some headers.

if u have an M5 then u have 3.23's, unless someone put the 3.08's in for some dumb reason, if u do have a M5 3.73's definately, if an A4 go w/3.42's...Black 1998 Pontiac Firebird A-4 swap
271.4rwhp/259.4rwtq NA
13.30@102.44
www.freewebs.com/wickedsix98

Im not really worried about the gas mileage i just want to know if u guys think my small shot would make up for the lack of top end my car will have if i go with 3.73s

This is only my opinion!!!
3.42 are a great set of gears but 3.73 are awesome. specially if you are going from 3.08 the difrence will be in the torque. Your car will deliver more power to the wheels and put you quicker in your power band. but thats just me, "I Like My Car Strong, Specially of the line or roll." The last time I check, loosing did not feel good at all! the issue with either gear is speed calibration and speedometer accuracy now that will be a topic you will face soon after gear swap.
Good luck, Enjoy and have fun!!

Get the 3.73s.
You won't regret it. Whoever says you'll lose a lot of top speed is full of ****. You'd lose like 10mph max so you can only do 110 instead of 120. Unless you're racing or something ... who cares
Launches with 3.73 ratio gears are real fun!
