    Rear End Swap

    heres the story guys...

    Last week i did the curb check from hell. The wheel, tire and rotor were ****ed so i replace them all hoping that would fix this god awful squeaking noise. turns out i also bent the axle. I bought the whole rear end off of a Z28 6sp for $250 and am waitin to install it for this weekend. Can someone tell me if there are any secrets i should know or things i should try before i install it (change fluid/gaskets/bearing)? It comes with the calipers and everything that i dont really need. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks.

    No secrets, it'll fit.
    Well, how many miles are currently on it? What year is it from?
    You won't need to change much because you probably already have disk's...right? Then it's basically a straight bolt-in. You may want to change the fluid though. Go to your nearest GM Dealer and get a bottle of Posi-Additive to go along with the new fluid. Try a search for rearend fluid to see what your options are.
    If it looks as though the pinion shaft is leaking bad, DON'T BUY THE REAR! It'll end up costing about $300 to have someone fix it once it's installed. If you carry the rear to them, it will probably be cheaper, but no by much.

      Make sure the gears are the same or you will have speedo issues.

        see what gears it has. change the fluid. don;t foget to add the LSD. hook everything up. if you already have rear disk brakes then just pull the calipers off and install them on the new rear so that you do not have to bleed the brakes. also make sure that it didn't have traction control

          i have 3.23's now and i am going to 3.42's. How big of a diff will this make until i get my HPP3?

            I went from 3.23's to 3.42 just a few months ago. I see about a 10% difference in speed. Nothing horrible. One thing about when I did my swap is that I busted the bolts to the sway bar. So I would suggest you should check your bolts, spray them down, and let that sit for a little before trying to unbolt anything.

              My rear end swap was all straight nuts and bolts. No problems.

              We did change the diffy fluid and bled the rear brakes while we were doin everything, though. It is a good idea.

                      alright, two days of working later and i got it swapped out. It was a lot bigger of a PITA than i was hoping, but its all good and working great. The old rear end needed a lot of prep work which took a lot of time and it was a great learning process to get it out and back in.

                      i LOVE the two nice strips its leaves as opposed to that one big long one.

                      One other question i have for u guys, how much is the speedo off and is that + or - what the speedo reads.

                          If its a Zexel LSD, you do not need additive, only for the clutch type LSD.

                          The speedo will read higher than what u are acutally going. The faster you go, the more it will be off.
