• Open?...or LSD...hmmmmmm....

ok...so a lot of guys helped me decide to go with a 3.42 unit...which are much easier to find too...but was looking on ebay and some are open and some are posi ...which is best?...does it really make a difference?...im assuming it does with the launch? (plus im tired of peg leg burnouts)

ok, Im confused. Gears will work with either open are posi carriers as long as the series (series II or series III) match up. What is it that you are looking to buy, a whole rear-end? a carrier w/ gears combo?

I believe he's looking for gears and LSD.

Yes you want Gears and the LSD.

2 series gears fit 2 series carrier regaurdless if its a LSD carrier or not same goes for series 3 carrier, but they are not interchangeable unless you replace both.

The LSD is better for obvious reasons.
You should def. go with the LSD carrier and 3.42 gears, i think you'll be pleased.

If you want 3.42s go with a rear end out of a 6 speed.

Or a Y-87 rear end

I would check your codes to see if you already have LSD and if you don't, definately get it.

Close but no. 2.73-3.08 = 2series. And 3.23-> = 3 series.

i obviously went the way of gears and LSD and my times dropped 5-6 10ths consistently.

i've said it 5 times before and i'll say it 100 more... i'm still astonished that you put all that other BS on before you did gears and LSD.

I have a ZT take off posi and GM 3.42 r&p sitting in my garage, just haven't had the money up to install them.

People have told me it was worthless to go down to the track with my converter and a 3.08 open rear...well somehow how I manage to pull better 60 foots 2.07 and 2.1's with my open rear. Its all about practice and how well you get the launch down. I will probably have to learn all over again when I get my posi installed.

LSD is better for obvious reasons, and its 99 dollars for a good differential that will handle a lot of power (about as much as our V6's will put out).

However, you don't absolutely HAVE to have posi to run decent times, and your times reflect it. I say you gain .2 to .3 with your new gears and posi. However, it cant hurt.
