• people whom have installed their own gears....

okay ive got all my gears and lsd and such sitting in my garage waiting to find someone to install them becuase i hear it is a very difficult install... i have installed a LSD on an fbody and that was a peice of cake and could do it again no problem. so my question is how much more is installing gears then just installing lsd? is there a lot more is the lsd the main part of gear install?

okay ill make this mulitiple choice for those that dont want to type

      A. putting the LSD in is the hardest part once you get all that out the way its not that bad.

      B. putting lsd is only half the battle, you have to worry about pinion getting aligned and everything perfectly.

      C. none of the above

      D. damn im hungry

let a professional do this..the rear end locking up is NOT cool and that will leave you stranded somewhere

        id say go with B B B B B B

and now its D..i got some cake in the frig. :D

I am just about ready to install my new gears and LSD and I will let you know how it went after I am done. It's my understanding that the hardest part of the job is getting the right shim between the pinion gear and the bearing. Supposedly if you change gearsets, you should be able to use the same shim. If this works, great, if not you have to pull the bearing off and try again. I measured a .003" interference fitting between the two, so I hope I get it right the first time because pulling the bearing off successfully involves luck. What I plan to do is to use the old bearing from the old pinion gear, hogging the inside race until it is a slip fit on the new pinion gear and using it for test fitting with different shims. Once I am happy, I will freeze the pinion gear to shrink it .001" (already did this) and heat the bearing in the toaster oven for a while to expand it .001" (works) which will reduce my interference fit to only .001" and will make it much easier to install. All of this because it seems to be impossible to rent a dept setting tool. The rest seems to be straight forward as long as you have the proper tools like torque wrenches and a dial indicator to size up your backlash. Add up the cost of the tools if you dont own them like I do, and it may be cost effective to job this chore out.

Wow, excellent use of physics to avoid hitting things with blunt objects. There's just one fatal flaw in your plan. What if you require a Pop-Tart during the install? If you wait until your bearing is done, it will taste like gear oil.

Always cook the pop tarts in a toaster on the cool setting or leave them on a warm dashboard in the sun for one half hour.
