  • My Differential!!

I purchased a Zexel Torsen T2 Limited Slip Differental from Thunderracing.com. This is the one of the only mods I didn't install myself. The differential cost me about $99 and about $175 to get installed, but this is by far one of the best mods I've done to my car!! My car took off alot faster and handled so much better, it was amazing! -Sometime around the end of July I noticed a grinding noise coming from my rear end. Well, I checked my differetial and found out that the shop I that had installed the differential for me did not put a gasket back on my cover, but instead had just used some gasket sealer that had obviously not worked. I had a terrible oil leak! I replaced the gasket and hoped that fixed the problem, but it was alread too late, the damgage was done, I just didn't know how bad. I recently purchased some 3.42 gears off ebaymotors and my friend and I were going to install them ourselves. As we dismantled my cars rear end, it soon became clear I had a bigger problem than at first anticipated. When we removed the differential, the end that faces the passengers side crumbled in my hand!!(I'll have pics soon!) I couldn't believe it! So now I had to order another differential and install it too! I'm going to try to install in sometime this week, jan 26-30, but I just had ankle surgery so we'll see how things go. I'll try to keep you guys updated.

Man, sorry to hear that. That blows big time. Best way to go so you don't have problems like that is to buy a whole rear end. To many problems can take place switching gears and differential alone. Best of luck to ya with the repairing of your rear, and hopefully your ankle gets better fast.

you never noticed 2-3 quarts worth of oil slowly leaking from the car? i always watch for oil spots. the rear end on my car leaked when it was brand new. it didn't stop leaking until i pulled off the paper gasket and replaced it with RTV gasket maker. most auto parts stores don't even sell the paper gaskets anymore; they recommend the gasket maker. i've used it both times i've had my diff cover off and never had a leak after replacing the factory gasket.

ive always had good luck w/using gaskets or silicone, just silicone takes too friggin long to clean off when have to put it back on so i prefer teh gasket, if the gasket leaks just tighten the cover some more, it'll seal...

First, the diff you got for $100 was probably a take-off and was a T-1, not a T-2. Second, I don't know how your shop was able to make your original 3.08 fit a different series carrier. I think they made them fit and that's the root of your catastrophy. Any shop that would skip using a real gasket would likely do such a thing. Take lots of pics and get ready for small claims court. Hint: judges love digital photos and technical references.

I have a M5, that came w/ 3.23 not 3.08s. About the law suit, I dont have any reciepts to prove that this shop did the work, so I cant prove that they are the ones responsible.
