  • Just changed tran fluid, have problems!!

Ok this is the deal, prior to the fluid&filter change i've been having problems with my transmission. Ocassional cruising at low rpms and jumping around a bit, and a few slips. It drives fine, and no problems other then that. So I decided to do a fluid change and a filter change. I thought that western auto changed the fluid but they didn't, they added some stupid gasket expander, them cheap bastards. The fluid is very very dirty and I don't think it was changed in a while. I just recently got my car a few months ago or so. There were no metal particles in the filter. But, in the bottom of the bucket we drained the fluid into I found a lot of dirt and a few metal particles. My friends dad, who is a mechanic, seems to think that it's not too big of a problem yet. And I seem to think it's just a little normal wear and tear put on the transmission. The fluid hasn't been changed in a while etc... The shifts are a lot firmer now but it still has a problem going into low RPMs while cruising, maybee i just haven't noticed it before now. But it drives fine. I'm going to put a transmission cooler on it for this summer and take it easy on the transmission. If I start facing bigger problems then I guess i'll have to take it in to a shop, i'm trying to avoid getting a rebuild by all means. Does anybody have any suggestions for me or advice? Any help would be appreciated with any past experiences etc...
    Thank You, Ted

Well there arent really any ways to SOLVE your problem totally. Id also say the particles and dirt you found are normal wear and tear. The first time i changed my fluid i had some TINY metal particles in the fluid but nothing major. IM due for another fluid change. If after the fluid change it STILL acts the same..id say have it looked at because its just going to get worse. There really isnt anything you can do to prolong the transmission for any EXTREME amount of time. The cooler will help but only until the problem starts getting worse.

I had a "surging" type problem when I was in drive or overdrive and the car was running at about 2000 rpms. There was an update to the PCM that corrected a TCC engagement problem at about this speed. You may want to ask the dealer if there are any updates available for your PCM and have them flash it. As soon as I applied the update, the surging was completely gone. I had spent months trying to track down the problem. Might be worth a shot to ask...
