I decided to take my console out today to see if it would be difficult because i would like to install a short throw shifter. And as I suspected, it was a pain in the *** . I would like to install the shifter but my questions are is the shifter a difficult installation, and is there any way I could remove/re-install my console without tearing up my parking brake handle? I tried to remove it, but it looks like there is a rivet holding it in place. Its a '97 Camaro. Any help would be appreciated.

Piece of cake -- you insert a flatheaded (And long) screwdriver down toward the parking brake's gear mechanism, to trigger a release lever. This lets the handle come up 90* or so, and you can just straight lift the lower console up and out of the car, so that the shifter can be installed. When you're finished, put the console back on, release the handle (either button or screwdriver, I forget), and try it a few times up and down to make sure it's back to normal.

on 97+ consoles, (M5/M6)

remove 2 7mm screws under the coin holder, inside the center console.

Remove shift knob.

Lift up on center section, to remove upper console

remove 1 10mm screw under the upper console.

Clean out all of the crap you have in the center console, so you can get to the 2 10mm screws under there.

Remove the 2 10 mm screws on the front/side of the console, 1 per side.

Do the e-brake thing, with finger, or screwdriver, and lift up.

Slide console out.

remove shifter boot cover, using a 7mm nut driver.

remove shifter, (not sure size on the V6)

reverse to put back together [img]smile.gif[/img]

all of the hardware was simple, it was just the parking brake that was in the way. I remove a lot of consoles, i'm serious, and i have never had this much trouble.
