  • rear end swap, weird noise?

Hi, i have a 97 3.8L and i swapped my stock open differential with a posi out of an ss. also switched to 3:73 gears. the problem is when i back off the gas i get a weird whining type of noise? has anyone had this problem? can u offer any advice as to what it might be and what to do about it?

May be the pinion bearing telling you something. I had a 86 T/A with just the opposite problem. It would whine as I was accelerating, and go away on deceleration. The mechanic told me it was a pinion bearing going bad, and fixed it for me at the cost of $250  and this was back in 1992. I don't want to guess how much it'll cost now.
    Good luck though.

That happened to my car....it was very unfortunate. It was the pinion gear coming loose, it lasted to within sight of a transmission shop and WHAM! Ate up the whole rear end...... DEFINATELY have it checked out.
