Good read for those who are interested in the T56 swap. There is also a shop listed in the last page that may have the parts necessary to convert the T56 over to 3.8l motors!

The input shaft is the only tough part to figure out. I have been trying to find a good T56 locally to get and play with while my engine is out. I think it will be an easy swap once I figure out which input shaft to use.

I've checked into this swap completely. Spent near an hour on the phone with some real smart techs over at Salle Chevrolet. It can definately be done. But I don't think the average performance sixer is going to be looking into or justifying this swap. A more realistic price was just over 3 grand (as oppossed to the 2700 figure in this article).

If you haven't already you are going to have to change your rear gear ratio, and you better have a powerful V6 or you won't push 6th gear on the highway. Not the .50 gear. The older LT1-T56's .62 gear might not have as much trouble pushing. But it'll still probably dog and chug a tad.

I calculate the need for about 250 horsepower and 4.10's to scoot you along fine in a .50 sixth gear.

        1,500 RPM = 57 MPH
        1,750 RPM = 66 MPH
        2,000 RPM = 75 MPH with 4.10's

So theoretically (with a 26" tire) 70 MPH should be at 1,875 RPM

When I do the swap, I plan on putting a 4.56 rear end in there. 6th gear really isn't a power gear of course. There are a lot of stock LS1s out there that don't pull a lot of acceleration out of 6th gear. I think this mod would be simply for guys that want a BIG rear end for the track, but don't wanna give up the cruising RPM's on the highway. I think that a V6 with decent mods and a 4.10 with the T56 would be a good idea and the owner would be very pleased. Not to mention that the T56 can handle A LOT more abuse than the T5 can.

FYI, there is a VERY similar article in the May, 2003 Chevy High Performance too. It uses a lot of the same pics, but some added information in the new article.

No one ever said anything about 6th gear being a sequential 'power' gear.

              Its the fact that 350 Ft-lbs times .50 times 3.42 equals 598.5

where as 225 times .50 times 4.56 equals 513. If you plan to cruise 70 MPH, a shift from 5th to 6th at a 4.56 rear will drop your RPM down to just 2,000 RPM.
If your engine is stock I think it's gonna chug a bit to try and run at 70 MPH? If it's worked on you should be okay.
I wouldn't try running 4.11's or less with that much overdrive.

I know with stock 3.23 gears and the .72 overdrive, 65 MPH in stock trim has a some minor trouble set in cruise control. Just not enough torque.

Being that 70 MPH with a .50 overdrive and 4.56's is about the same engine speed. I'm just saying that it might not be cost effective in gas savings. If the cruise control or you half to use 1/2 throttle or more to feed the engine enough fuel to keep going?

If you own an automatic you'll be losing some acceleration as far as your sequential gears are concerned. (And really losing if you have a T5). Going from a 3.06 first to a 2.66 first. or worse a manual's 3.75:1 down to a 2.66:1. Well, you won't be "losing" any, it will feel exactly the same 3.75 x 3.23 = 2.66 x 4.56 but you are missing out on gearing you "could have" had.

T56's don't have aftermarket gears available. Might be able to swap out the 2.66 for the LT1's 2.95 first, and same for second and third. But for that reason I am still swapping to a six speed, just not a GM T56.

As many people here know, my engine is far from stock. One of the main reasons that I am switching to a T56 is the fact that the T5 will not handle a 200 shot of nitrous. The T56 will. I will let you know how the swap turns out.

If you do want to stick with a T-5...A G-Force T-5 will support 650 horsepower!

I have wanted a 6-speed for a while now. T-56s are so readily available for decent prices that I don't really want to go any other direction.
