  • Trying to figure out if my Tranny Mount is broken

Ok guys. I've got a question. When you are driving, how much does your shifter move around? When I hit a bump or anything, my stick moves a good deal.

I don't think my car has the "Clunk" that you have when the mount is broken though. Is there anything else I can look for that would tell me if the mount is broken or not?

Would autozone or checker or Napa have a mount on hand?

Also, sometimes, when I'm shifting from first to second, its hard to get into gear. Not that it grinds or anything, its just hard to put into gear for some reason. What would account for this?

    Thanks!

I can't tell you for sure whether the mount is broken, but I have a piece of advice for you: get polyurethane.

I put in a poly transmission mount ($20 from summit) and now the stick doesnt move AT ALL. Also, the first to second shift that you mentioned did seem to become smoother.

A rubber mount from the dealer is like 45 dollars, and a great poly mount is 20. Hmmm.....

One word of caution- the new poly mounts are a little too short, so you have to use either a spacer plate or washers to shim it up. I used rubber insulators- so you can actually consider my mount to be a rubber/poly blend- its quieter than straight poly, and the stick still doesnt move a millimeter.

The OEM mount is 119 dollars. I bought one. I tried using a standard RWD transmission mount and it makes the driveshaft angle off. It causes some intense vibration. Some say it goes away after a few days. And have had it in for years now with no harmful affects witnessed. I think I am going to go back and install the one I bought, but I am going to order 3 or 4 stack plates to shim it down the half-inch it sits higher from stock.

Also you'll have to modify your transmission crossmember. You might try the V8 crossmember or the automatic crossmember, they might fit?

Normally when it's broke it will clang when you accelerate hard, or chug the engine. Some vibration is normal out of the shifter, and when you hit bumps it will move some. But nothing drastic.

I'd get underneath, pull it off and inspect it. I've got it down to a science now. I can pull the mount in about 10 minutes.

Like Bliggida, if it's making noise, it's broken. When my mount broke on my 84 Firebird and my 87 TA, the trans would clunk the floor in 1st gear under full throttle.

When I got my 2000 Camaro, I noticed the stick jumped around over bumps and throttle quite a bit, but took it back and they said it was fine. My WS6's stock mount did this also, but I replaced it with the 1LE and then the poly-urethane so now it barely moves. I don't know if it's the same for the V6, but for my poly mount, I shaved down the bumps and got rid of the preload plate so there is very little noise coming from it.

Put the shifter in first, slam the gas let off, slam the gas, if it hops up like 2-3 in. its the tranny mount.

I reccomend 1le, stornger then rubber but not as harsh as poly, my shifter barely moves, I got mine for ~$30. some people complaing about bad vibrations with poly tranny mounts, but whatever you want.
