  • V8 Swap Rear End Problems?

Within the next year or twom, I plan on swapping a V8. But i dont know if my rear will handle the power. will i have to replace the drive shaft, axel, and shocks and springs? before i swap im going to turbocharge this 3.8 until i save enough do the swap but i dont know what the rear can handle. i dont want my car to just fall apart when adding 200 to 300 HP

You will eventually want a new rear, ds, and must have a tranny....but buying a turbo and installing will cost as much as an engine swap...save money for the swap.

The rear end on the L36 and LS1 are the same, with changes only in gearing and type of differential. Both are same 7.5" So, you won't need to swap persay. A stock axle can hold up to 450 horsepower on street tires. Around 400 with slicks. Unless you plan on swapping a V8 of considerably more power than stock, there isn't a need to build a stronger rear end. I'd invest in putting that power to the ground instead. The only thing that will probably be different is the driveshaft. You'll want to swap that one out for the stronger and lighter aluminum driveshaft of an LS1 car. Especially if you have a manual transmission. The two-piece carrier bearing unit will be unsafe! Also the transmission crossmember won't fit as it is (special only to the M5 V6) Auto V6/V8 should be the same crossmember.

Torque arms appear to be different, shocks, etc. But the actual axles and axle shafts are the same part numbers. As is the gears. 3.42 V6 gears = 3.42 V8 gears, neither is stronger. Merely check for LSD or not.
