  • Picked up used rear, has a whine

I just put in a new rear end from a 96 Y87 Camaro. And now there is a whine coming from the rear. Its not like a real high pitched whine that you can sometimes hear from cars with the gears that are really tight, but more of a lower tone. I opened the carrier before I put it on the car and put in new fluid. I put in 3 pints (what the parts store recomended) Should I put in the full 2 quarts? There were no shaving on the rear end cover magnet. The sound seems to go away when I get on the gas a little (but that could be because I can't hear it over the exhaust)

Anyone have any ideas? I have a 30 day warranty on the rear end, so I can still take it back and get a different one If I make up my mind soon enough.

BTW: I put on new rotors and pads, so could they be rubbing a little bit causing some of this sound?

is it a whine or more of a roar.. a roar is often times a bearing going out.. my first guess if it is roaring would be pinion bearing.. if it sat up for too long and the bearings dried out you could have problems..

might wanna find someone that knows rear end's to get a look at it..

If by chance it is a pinion bearing, how much does that cost? Would the gears and everything have to be taken out and put back in? Just trying to decide if it's worth it to take it back or try to fix it...

      Are axle bearings a possibility?

      Thanks for any help.

I had a bearing go bad 9 years ago and cause a whine in my 86 T/A. Took it to a shop, and it ran me $300 to get it replaced. Yes, all of the gears had to come out, and I took it to someone because I didn't have the proper tools for re-installing the gears.

double check your pinion angle is set straight on your rear end.

Also you you need a limited slip additive they sell at the parts stores, try that if you have not already put it in. If it doesn't go away take it back.

Mustangeater, To check the pinon angle, do you mean the angle of the axle tilt or check the pinion inside the housing? I had a local mechanic listen to it last night with a stethascope and he said it sounded like either the gears or the pinion bearing was messed up. I put in new fluid when I got it, including the additive.

I'm looking into taking it back next weekend. If I can't solve the problem soon.

Will a rear end from a LS1 work? (or ls1 model years if its y87)?

            Thanks for the help.

I just got used gears put in my rear end. And, at first it was fine, no noise.

But, then I installed LCA's with poly bushings, and I heard a loud whine. Its only really noticeable between 75 and 80 mph. But, before the poly bushings, I didnt even know it existed.

I dont think I care about it- it worries me a little sometimes, but I usually just forget about it.
