I've owned three Chevy 5 speeds in the past 5 years and I've had this problem on all of them. I believe in some of the new (2003?) Cavliers and other GM standards, there is something that you pull up on the shift knob when shifting into reverse that makes it go in smoother, I dont know how it works, never seen it but I've been told about it.

The grinding and difficulty is due to the fact that reverse does not have a synchronizer like the other gears. Try popping it in 5th first and then hit reverse, it works a lot better.

My 2000 Camaro did it, my 1987 TA did it, my 1984 Firebird did it, so it's nothing new .

I concur, Go into 5th and wait for the syncros to stop moving, then switch back to R. Leave the clutch in the whole time, just be patient and it will work.

            Mine never grinds anymore.
