Converters don't add any tq or hp like an exhaust or supercharger does.

They basically put more of what your engine makes to the ground.

A torque converter can take a second or more off your 1/4 mile time (if you can get the traction).

You will see some hp & torque gain, but nothing close to 40hp. More like 10-20 tq over the entire powerband. Max hp & tq might not even change, but the curves the dyno reads should be much better before the max.

And Palmer, thats 40hp on an ls1 -- which, if you remember all the other claims manufacturers make (25 hp from a catback, 25 from cai, etc.) is a tad inflated.

Go there look at the 9.5 inch converters and read up on it James. Maybe you need a new converter.. LOL!!! :D

      You crack me up.
      I'll keep my converter
I'll keep my 170 rwhp and run 14.4 all day long pulling low 1.9 60 foots (almost 1.8's) with only 323 gears.
Go ahead, keep telling people that converters ADD horsepower

To all the others, please disregard Mr Palmer, he is unfortunately misinformed.
      http://www.converter.cc/

I run the pro yank 3200 / 3600 nitorus converter
Naturally aspirated I knocked off .4 on my 60 foot and .6 - .8 in the 1/4 mile.

But, what do I know, obviously Mr Palmer knows more.

Hey Brad, what aftermarket converter do you have???

Guess I'll have to chime in. The reason you don't see any horsepower or torque increase on the dyno is because you dyno with the converter locked, or at least that is what you are supposed to do. The torque converter only multiplies the torque when it is slipping. A looser converter will generally multiply the torque more at the bottom, but will be less efficient at higher rpm's, increasing drivetrain losses. The lockup clutch is the way around this, so that you don't have to worry about TC efficiency when cruising down the road.

By definition any time you multiply the torqe you multiply the horsepower. You have not changed the power output of the motor. The TC is analagous to a lower gear in the transmission. The wheels will have more torque applied to them, but when you talk about power output people usually want to know what you are getting from the engine. That's why you dyno in a gear with a 1:1 ratio, and if you are in an automatic you lock the converter.

With the converter i should be running around 1.6 60's without n20 and 14.4 quarter mile.. And if you look at my comming up mods you will see its not stopping there. Before long ill be in the 13's NA.. Hey i just came on here trying to give a person some advise.. Ok so why dont you back the **** up.. :D

Bradley, you won't do well to be insulting James. Along with Keith (Magnus), he holds the fastest spot. He knows his stuff and you won't do well here insulting him. Many people on this board respect him, including myself, so pushing on him will only lower you in others eyes. I'm not saying to give input, but MAKE SURE you know it before throwing things in James's face. No worries, just have some fun.

                -Justin

P.S. James is never on the bench, he is either filling the bottle or behind the wheel.

I started this with the knowledge provided by vigilante industries and fasttoys.com. I had no intentions of starting anything. He came into my business and started ****. He can take it up with the two sorces above to prove me wrong. And yeah he has a fast car. I know alot of people with fast cars.

I have personally had my car dynoed before and after the converter and had no gains. The tuner locked my converter in 3rd gear and did the pulls.

If the converter is not locked you will get converter flash and get all kinds of crazy HP and Torque numbers.

Bottom line is if you do dyno it with the converter open you will "gain" hp and torque but in reality they are not real numbers.

Depending on how you look at torque converters, bradley, keith, and james are all right. Bradley is right because a torque converter does multiple the engine's torque, so it can SEEM like the engine is making 30-50 more hp to the wheels, but the engine is still making the same Hp and Tq. Keith and james are right by saying the torque converter does not make more power for the engine, because it's not the engine, it's the transmission/torque converterhelping make more power. When you dyno a car, the torque converter is locked up, so that it's not multiplying the torque and you get a correct reading of wheel hp and tq. bradley, u know that people can exaggerate claims to make their products look better, and depending on wording, can make things seem 100 times better than they actually are.

man i don't know what the hell you are talking about. why do they call a torque converter a torque converter? cause it helps TORQUE, not horsepower. unless your converter is less efficient than stock converters (which is highly unlikely), you aren't losing any hp at any given moment in your cars shifting. otherwise your horsepower will be no different, even if dyno numbers are.
