Converters don't add any tq or hp like an exhaust or supercharger does.
They basically put more of what your engine makes to the ground.
A torque converter can take a second or more off your 1/4 mile time (if you can get the traction).
You will see some hp & torque gain, but nothing close to 40hp. More like 10-20 tq over the entire powerband. Max hp & tq might not even change, but the curves the dyno reads should be much better before the max.
And Palmer, thats 40hp on an ls1 -- which, if you remember all the other claims manufacturers make (25 hp from a catback, 25 from cai, etc.) is a tad inflated.
