What type of rearend is in my car?

My car is a 1989 camaro RS with the 2.8L and a 5SPD. Does anyone know what type of rearend is in this car and the gears? ( posi or std )

I am new at this what does that mean "open" and are 3.23 good or bad?

Open means that the differential is not a posi. In other words, when one wheel spins, there's only one tire mark on the ground (unlike a posi which transfers power to the non spinning tire in order to try and get grip).

You may want to double check on that gear ratio. I know my 1984 5spd came with a 3.42 rear gear ratio.

Can i change something inside the rearend to make it posi or does it require changing the whole rearend. What about the gears what is a good number? 3.23 or 3.42 what type is cruise and what type is racing?

3.23 can be good or bad.

It depends on what you want out of your car.

rule of thumb is the lower the number the higher potential for top speed, where the higher the number the quicker the car will be.

3.23=highway gear (although 12secondV6 does very well with them)

4.11=1/4 mile gear, magnus holds the quickest 1/4 mile time on this board, I think he runs 4.11s

You can buy a Posi gear setup and install it on the rear you have now, but I recommend having a professional do it because of precise measurements that MUST be met.
As for types of gears, you can go with 3:08's which will give you an awesome top speed on the highway, but minimal accelleration from a stop, or 4:11's which will give you a nasty accelleration from a stop, but you'll lose top speed. If you want something that falls in the middle, try 3:42's. Alot of people here run that gear, and love them.

Since he has 3.42's already, going with 3.73's will be better. It'll give you slightly quicker acceleration while not sacrificing top speed/mpg's too much.

You don't need a whole rear end, all you need is a posi unit, an install kit, and gears (plus something to fix the speedo from being off).

my info is right, he has 3:23 gears

Eaton Differential - This differential fits cars with 3.23 and numerically higher gears (almost all V6's). Only some 1982-1983 V6's came with gears numerically lower than 3.23. It is part number is ETN-19599-010 and costs $439.95 at Summit Racing.

yea, i didnt see that you had a manual.
i would still think 3:23's
i think they didnt put 3:42's in a 4th gen manual so im almost sure that you wouldnt have 3:42's.
almost 90% positive you have 3:23's. if i can find something to back up my info, ill post it.
