I just got thinking about this. In the Salt Lake Valley, the snow usually doesn't get too deep, but it would be awesome to have AWD on the firebird. I know that the reply will probably be "too expensive, buy a WRX instead", but I would really like to hear more about this idea. What is required, is the room even there? etc. Thanks!

Hey man thats awesome! I bet you are in love with your car. Admit it. Instead just givigin up, your toying with the idea of making f-body awd.. that deserves a pat on the back! I am going to to an lt1 swap in the next year, and people are constantely saying "just trade it in lamer a$$" and "man you're so stupid, go die" but i just shrug them off, because trading in my car for a v8 is the same to me as getting a new son because mine can't read well... (no im only 17 but damn watch out, my metaphors are forizzle) props to you buddy and good luck!
woohoo f-body owners rule! Now only if i can find one in my town who isn't a middle aged woman! :D

i think the engine would have to be moved back, because a transaxle would have to be placed right between the front wheels, and the engine is sitting there right now. most likely, the engine would have to be placed where back by the rear axle, use a Corvette transaxle for the rear, and run a driveshaft up to a front transaxle. it would take a lot of custon work and fabrication. if you could make it work, that would be 1 tight car. no traction problems, better weight distribution, ect.

It could probably be done, but it would take a tremendous amount of planning, luck, work, and money. My best advice would be to do some research on AWD in general. Keep in mind though that you probably would not be able to keep your current engine. Engines in f-bodys are made for RWD, so I can't see any way you could fit a front drive axle. Good luck!
You can do anything with enough money, and it would be really cool, but I doubt it would be worth it. AWD cars get great traction off the line, but they lose a greater percentage of power due to the drivetrain efficiency. Sure, you'd get great traction and 60 ft times, but I think the car actually might be slower.

Idea #1. You could always try and get and 3.8 from a junked Pontiac Gran Prix GTP (with that lovely FACTORY installed blower) and install that into the front of your F-Body. That would take care of half of the issues since the GTP is a FWD vehicle. After you got that far (and you'd probably have to get a custom built hood of put a lift kit on your car to get the engine, blower and tran-axle to fit) then you'd have to "custom-run" a shaft to your rear axle an you'd be in AWD bling-bling heaven!
Idea #2: Go get the whole driveline off a 4X4 S-10 or blazer (and don't forget that lovely 4.1 vortec), screw around with the gears a little (once again, your probably going to need a 3" lift or so...)and you've got your AWD/4X4 Camaro. Should be great fun in the snow and off road. Might I suggest mudflaps and KC lights to give it the "complete look".
?Sure, you'd get great traction and 60 ft times, but I think the car actually might be slower.?
Ever heard of the diablo VTR, or the Porsche 959?
It seem to me there was a pike peak Toyota Tacoma that had all wheel drive that ran an 11 in the ¼
At any rate it could be done and yeah it would be sweet, can you imagine the look on the face of the guy you lined up next to when the front tires went to smoking?
I have made a lot of money in my life, most of which I spent on cars and women.<p>The rest I have blown.
