• Called TCI on torque converter...need some help

Well, my transmission just went out on me so I'm looking into a rebuild and since its down I decided on getting a TC and a shift kit. I have always used TCI Torque Converters. In fact that's the TC that's been in my '69 Camaro SS since I first put it together. So I called them up last night and was like OK man I need you help. I want a stall rating of 2400-2600 but it has to be at that rating for my V6 not the small block V8 or big block V8. The guy told me OK that's no problem the only thing that determines the stall rating is the amount of torque your motor produces. We have had a few V6 F-body owners buy TC's from us with this same need and you need part #243015. This is a TCI Streetfighter 10" converter w/ lock-up and for a small block V8 it will stall in the range of 3000-3400. He estimated that with this stall I should stall at about 2300-2600. What do you all think about this TC and do you think I'm going to need to put an external transmission cooler? I have one in the radiator but do you think I should invest in a different one? Thanks a lot for your help. -Vic-

that stall size converter will net some small small gains. get at least a 3000 stall. maybe look into there street fighter for the LS1. should stall in the 3000+ range or get them to custom make one. the input shaft is different for the LS1 and the V6. and make sure that the converter you get is 9.5 inches

tranny cooler may not be needed on something that small if thats what you get. BUT a cooler is good insurance. Heat destroys these transmissions

Oh I almost forgot, our transmissions are a 27-spline not a 30-spline correct?

27 spiline. man please make sure you get at least a converter that will stall to 3000 on your car... anything lower is waste of money

Hey thanks a lot for the replies LordoftheBling. Why is it you feel so strongly that I need a 3000 stall? Also how much do you feel I will notice in gas mileage by going to the 3000 w/lock-up vs. the 2600 w/lock-up?

lord, it's not all about stall speed, it's about STR and Efficiency. I think a good combo for most street cars would be 2.5 str and 97% eff. this is the combo I'm gonna get on my car, but I haven't decided on the stall for it yet, probly 3000 or less.

I have had a 3000 stall and i would not have gone any less. I was thinking about getting a 2800 stall and if i had i would have regerted it hardcore. Car drove like a stock on the street but when i took her to the track i got 1.83 60 foots NA and 1.63 60 foots on nitrous. I have now upgraded to a 3800 stall converter and man it rips

well the STR really determines hwo the car drive on the street. i have a Vigilante 3500 stall with a 2.5 STR and it drive just fine. actually picked up MPG with the stall..lol. and as far as eficiency.. they are all inefficient. dont be fooled by the claim.. mine is inefficient, the edge is inefficient..trend continues to all brands.
higher you go the more fun you will have.. on a fairly stock car 3200 would be gravy

no, lower str means you can get more efficiency out of it. anything aftermarket will be better than stock, both in efficiency and str.

I will have to agree with lord of the bling the higher the stall the less chance you are gonna have tiopened unless it is paired right with the cam and gears and may other things. Whice takes dyno tuning and everything

Hey since you guys were talking about how much it will help to have a 3000 stall. How much better do you think I can run with the Trans-Go Shift Kit and the stall (both the 2600 and the 3000 stall)? My best is listed in my signature and so are my mods. From what I hear a higher stall TC will usually require at least a stage 1 Transgo because it makes your shifts softer. Most people that I have seen with 2800-3400 go with a Stage 2 Transgo.

Yes, from what I have heard it does make the shift much softer. I have ordered the Trans-Go shift kit from summit.

I would say you could drop from .3-.4 in the 60 foot with traction. I went from a 14.8 to a 14.3 with alittle timing adjustament a TQ converter and lighter weight. Thta was with my 3000 stall. I cant wait to try the 3800 stall
