Well the topic is pretty much the question. I am havin some tranny problems latly. It seems like the rpms are going faster than the tranny can keep up with, and it slips. So I don't really know whats wrong with it...its kinda scaring me.

Yes, the torque converter can go bad....my tranny had a problem (known by GM) with the torque converter clutch (tcc) apply valve leaking, and causing the to tcc to slip more than apply. I just got the tranny rebuilt, and when the guy who did it pulled the tc out, he said that it was fried. He tried applying the clutch, and he said it didn't have anything left to apply with.
As to it not applying, the problem is a result of the type of tcc apply that is used. After 1995, GM went to a pulse-width modulated (pwm) tcc apply valve. Basically, it was to make a nice soft apply, so your average joe wouldn't cry about the tcc banging in. Problem with it is that after a while, the apply piston starts leaking, and can't provide enough pressure to apply the tcc. This, of course, causes the tcc to slip, and starts running the tranny temps up, and will eventually start causing the tranny to overheat, etc. You'll start having problems with the shifts at low speed and part throttle, it'll feel like you're getting rear-ended, it shifts so hard. GM put out a revised valve body design after 2000, but Superior Transmission also puts out a kit that gets rid of the pwm apply, and converts it to a straight on-off apply.
That's what I have now, and it is much better than the pwm apply. It's like having a 5th gear. Hope this helps.
