What im saying is its not bad, but you will notice a differance, and it is noticable. Its more like 70 + accleration and to me it does matter. The car used to just launch from 70 but now it just sort of takes off ;) the accleration is still there but its not the same and its not like it was and no one can say that their accleration iss exactly the same as it was. It just is a question of can you accpet the loss of a little top end for soem more low end power. And my answe is yes.

i think this is dumb.

consider this:

what are you doing to your car when you are raising your gears? you are making the driveshaft spin up more, gaining more power, and then turning the wheels. how could you lose power doing so? you are giving the driveshaft a chance to gain more momentum and thus, turn the wheels at a quicker rate.

i have no personal experience with the top end and 3.08 to 3.73 change, but honestly, if anything, the theory behind gear changing would prove you quite wrong.

The ONLY place that you lose performance at higher speeds with gears is at the speed ranges where you would have been one transmission gear lower before the rear end gears.

For example: If with 3.23s you shifted from 3rd to 4th at 105 mph and with 3.73s you shift at 95 mph, between 95 and 105 you would have had better acceleration with the 3.23s because you OVERALL (transmission + rear) gear ratio would be LOWER in that speed range. Above 105 your acceleration would be BETTER with the 3.73s (until you shift into 5th then the above scenario repeats itself).

Also keep in mind that horsepower, unaffected by gearing, is a better indicator of top speed potential than rear end gearing. Regardless of gearing, you are trying to move an object of X weight the maximum possible speed with incredible wind resistance (Don't think wind resistance is a factor? Try sticking you hand out the window when you are going 120 mph and if you arm isn't taken off, try taking your open hand and "pushing" it forward. Multiply that force required by a couple hundred and that's what your car is trying to overcome).

Exception to the above is some of the old school drag cars with a 1.00:1 (or lower) transmission top gear transmission ratio and 4.56 or steeper gears that were set up to reach top speed (usually near maximum engine rpms) in top gear at or slightly past the end of the quarter mile making them truly strip cars. The thing was that this way no power got "wasted" accelerating the car faster than "necessary".

I love my 3.42s

Best all around gear for a v6

Only time I'd get 4.10s is when I get an LS1 :D

I have to say stomping my car at 60 it feels a whole lot stronger than it did, I just went from 3.42's to 3.73's. There is a noticeable loss on top end but nothing to complain about. My speedo is about 10mph off so I am topping out around 115-120, before I could "burry the needle into the voltage gauge" ;) but now 120 tops, but thats ok until I start trapping at 120 then we will have problems ;) :D

i just got my 3.73s put in not too long ago and i freaking love them.
my speedo is recalibrated and i am flying on top end.
i drive 70 mph at 2500 rpms. it used to be 2000 rpms. thats not to bad. but once you start going over 70 the rpms start to realy jump up there. i have not driven faster than 80 mph so i cant tell you anything along those lines.
6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

I did for sure when I went from 3.23 to 3.42. I used to have one of the highest trap sppeds I ahd seen...as seen on the time slips page, I trapped pretty high for my ET....now I trap an average of 1 mph slower all the time...my ET's are faster, but trap speeds have never been as high as before. Deal with it. Just like fuel economy..it goes against the nature of a car to get 50mpg AND run 13's in the 1/4 mile. There is nearly always a give and take.

I agree: I've noticed an improvement in top end going from 3.08s to 3.42s.
