• Trans. and Diff. Cover torque specs

Can anybody tell me what the torque requirements are for both the transmission pan, and the differential cover. I really need to just go out and just buy a service manual for it, and then I wouldn't have this problem, but thanks in advance. BTW, I have a 2000 Firebird, auto transmission.

Not off the top of my head. I would have to look it up. On stuff like that I usually don't use a torque wrench anyways. I just bring out that tool when it has to be exact precision. (i.e. head bots, caps, etc) stuff like that. :D
    Thanks,
JAM
02 Firebird GT

Thank you for the help. I managed to find an install page for an aftermarket differential cover, so I think it'd be okay just to go by that.

rear dif cover .. just tighten it very tight.

15 ft/lbs perhaps. I don't really use a torque wrench.. just tighten it as tight as i can pretty much with a small 3/8" drive.

If you use a gasket and not gasket maker, it makes the job much easier as the gasket maker always gets inside of bolt holes and seeps over edges..

My diff cover is off bi-monthly and the first time it had gasket maker on it.. made the job twice as long... I even re-use the gasket sometimes.

Thanks for the tip. I went to the dealership and bought the new gasket. I've heard though, that some use a combination of the new gasket and the gasket maker stuff. Have you had any problems with leaking just by replacing the gasket?

no leak problems with just a gasket.

I really try to avoid gasket maker on the rear end. It's a big mess.

No leaks with just a gasket here either. I was so afraid it would start to leak after I put the cover back on with a new gasket, but no problems after 10k mi.

Use one of the vacuum pumps and it won't be too terrible. If you get it in your hair it will stand alone for days.
