Unless those are 2 series gears then he will need a 3 series differential.

They make 3 series open differentials but why bother. If you're going to go through the trouble to swap gears buy a 3 series carrier, carrier meaning differential, and get the torsen for $100. Its a bargain and its significantly better than everything else on the market.

ok i did some looking around, and from what i gather is that...

              stock 3.08 or 3.23 = series 2 carrier
              stock 3.42 = series 3 carrier

so since i have 3.08 i would have to get a set or 3.42 or 3.73 that would fit in a series 2 carrier... please correct me if i'm wrong on this, also what would all go into changing my differential to a series 3 carrier, to fit the 3.42's? i want to go with 3.73's but i don't want my speedo and rpm's to be off. with the 3.42's i can get a dealership to reprogram it with the specs of a car that has them stock...

is there anything else that i need to know? oh yeah another thing i was thinking about is a TC and with the 3.73's it may be too much so thats another reason why i was thinking about the 3.42's, please lemme know what ya'll think...

3.23 gears are also for a 3 series carrier. You can buy 3.23 and 3.42 for a 2 series carrier, but that is not the norm. Most are made for the 3 series carrier. To sum up the speedo problem, you will have one unless you get custom programming, a dealer to change the gear setting in your PCM (not likely), an HPP3 if one is available for the year of your car, or the best option a y87 PCM, same year as your car if you can find one. I'm pretty sure that it also has to match whether or not your car is manual or automatic. If you go this route, ask Dom for details.

Oh, speed calibrators don't work. They fix the speedo, but make no adjustments for increase RPMs. Causes all sorts of problems related to the PCM thinking your tranny's slipping. Don't even think about getting an after market torque converter if you have one. Trust me, I have one. It's useless. Hope this helps.

ya, but i've heard that you can get the scu2000 and make adjustments saying you have a modded tire size and you can pretty much correct the shifts. then of course, your speedo will be off by a mere 2% or so, from what i've heard. but 2% and pretty accurate shifts is pretty decent in my opinion.
