  • Stall Converter....

    1) What does it do? (As much detail as possible please :D ... pretend I'm an imbecil in this area... because really I am)

    2) Is it good for a daily driver? For example...

    3) Will it cut down on my mpg?

    4) Will it ruin my transmission or engine faster than if I didn't have one? (Or if I already have one and don't know it.... then will it ruin things faster with it set up to 3k or something)

    1)http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm

a higher rpm stall speed indicates at what RPM the TC locks up.

2)I have a 2800rpm stall converter from edge racing (the street edge model) and i use it for my daily driver

3)yes, the higher stall speed the worse your mileage overall will be, especially in the city. I get around 360 to the tank if I'm lucky, however there isn't a time when I don't WOT the car or am in city traffic.

4)doubtful. Edge told me my tranny temps would be lower with their converter...dunno how true that is.

With my converter, i actually have a 3rd gear now. I think its the best mod I've done yet. And I know I have something that will hold all the power I'll ever throw at it. I think its good up to 450-500hp.

You need to get a tranny cooler if you get a convertor with a stall speed higher than stock.

no. </font>[/QUOTE]I disagree. I would most definatly install a tranny cooler with an aftermarket Torque Converter.

                http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/info/bad_mods.htm

First one. I've been running mine since April, been to the strip about 3 times with my high stall plus normal daily driving.

No adverse affects. Edge also told me I wouldn't need one unless I'm towing.

However, this is just my car and personal experiences. If you want to spend the money on a cooler, do it, who cares.

Im picking up my car w/ built tranny and TC tonight. Next mod I do is going to be adding in a tranny cooler.

Please remember that practically every mod you do will 'ruin' your car faster than if you left it stock. Each time you do something, it is either going to lead into a supporting mod, or else lead to excessive wear on something else that you will replace. I figure that in the next two years, my car is going to basically be brand new except for the frame and body.... and at that it will be getting to be time for paint. This is an addicting hobby.
