I installed a hurst shifter a few months ago and ever since its been making some annoying rattles and noises. It is only bad at certain times in lower rpm ranges (<1800 usually when I give it a little extra gas). When installing I used sealant but I think I may have stripped one of the screws, even though I was using a torque wrench and didn't surpass the recommended rating. I then tightened it as best I could and let it go. Are these noises regular?

Yea that sounds like the noise I was trying to describe, whurring...
But do you think I should do anything about the stripped screwhole? It is still held securely by the other three screws as far as I can tell, and I can't think of any way to fix it.
Another ?:Is there any reason I should change my trans fluid? How can I tell if its low besides checking, would it make any distinct noises?M5, posi, headers-3\"hooker catback, spec2, alum DS, whisper lid & K&N, hurst, eagle 077s w/kumho supras, subframes, 3point stb, trans hatch

I changed mine just to safe. To do so there are two plugs on the right side of the transmission, slip a 3/8ths drive ratchet into the upper one and remove it. The transmission fluid should be at this top plug. To change it remove the lower plug and let it drain then replace the lower plug, then using a pump which attaches to the top of the bottle of transfluid, pump the fluid into the top hole until it is full then replace the plug, job done. When i changed mine it made quite a mess though so be prepared.
As for the stripped bolt try drilling out the threads, tapping them inserting a helicoil then replacing the boltthe black 97
New favorite Mods: Hptuners, and SLP 2OTL

How would I tap them and insert a helicoil? Can I get one for that size bolt at lowes? How does the helicoil stay in the position in metal? Sorry for the ignorance, ive only heard of using taps on concrete and drywall.M5, posi, headers-3\"hooker catback, spec2, alum DS, whisper lid & K&N, hurst, eagle 077s w/kumho supras, subframes, 3point stb, trans hatch

There are a lot of books that will explain helicoils to you. My favorite is Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners, and Plumbing Handbook.

It's not a simple deal (you need special tools) but it's a good way to repair damaged threads.

Some low fluid level symptoms are jerky shifts, difficult to get in gear (especially in cold weather) and "crunching" gears, like as if you let out the clutch a hair too soon.1994 Firebird 3.4
15.65 @ 86.8
funkz.net/firebird
Timeslips
