Pinion seal leaking? Is there a GM service bulletin on this?

The pinion seal is in the rear of the housing (or towards the front of the car). If you get an install kit when you change gears you should be getting a new seal with the kit. So basicly if your seal is leaking you have an excuss to swap gears since who ever does the job will have to pull the old gears out to replace the seal.

Same here. Just a GM design flaw.

I have also done the rebuild and mine still leaks. I must have changed 10 of these pinion seals that I have put on ever since the original one was replaced. It's good I'm not the only one here suffering from that dilemma but also its bad that everyone has this dilemma.

when i did the gears on mine it would leak but it wasnt the seal leaking it was coming out through the splines on the pinion gear, so i pulled the nut off and put a crapload of teflon paste and re-torqued it and there hasnt been a drop come off of it for about 5000-10000 miles

Teflon paste? Is this the same paste that you would use for plumbing?

had it on my 94 before I did a rear axle swap.(actually one of the reasons I did a rear axle swap)

so far *knock on wood* no problems on my current car but I have a spare pinion seal just in case, I bought it thinking my old one was gonna be toast in my 94, when I broke the torque arm and rotated the axle a bit.

Yeah, I know this is an old thread, but where do you fill up the oil in rear diff? Mine like all F-Bodies leaks a few drops of oil everynow and then and I was wondering how to top it up.

There is a 3/8 square drive plug on the side of the diff, about 3/4 of the way up the housing. Use a 3/8 drive rathet with an extension to unscrew it, and make sure the fluid level is right up to the bottom of the hole.
