  • 2002 SS Rear End

Will it bolt up to my 97 3.8? He said it should with no problem just making sure. It's got 3.42 gearing, and posi of course! And it's disc brakes wich is a big +. How hard will it be to convert? He said all it needs is the bearings, and for $100 I guess I can't go wrong. Thanks!

it will work fine with some work on your part. lots of those SSes have ASR, which is not compatible with our drivetrain.

i would also find out which bearings need to be replaced. do your homework.

Which bearings? If it's axle bearings, those aren't that difficult to replace. If it's carrier or pinion bearings however you're in for some work.

TCS was available as early as '96 (I have a rear from that year) but I'm not sure if the 3 channel ABS was ever phased out. Do late model, non-TCS cars get the 4 channel?

If the car had TCS (traction control) then it has 2 brake lines going to the rear. If it doesn't have TCS it only has 1 brake line going to a T fitting.

Also if the car had TCS it has dual ABS sensors, one behind each rotor. If not, it has the one sensor in the differential.

Putting a TCS rear in a non-TCS car means you have to change out the brake lines to allow the T fitting to be installed. The factory TCS lines are two different sizes to differentiate left/right.

The ABS wiring is identical with exception of those 2 extra wires for the second rear sensor. The rear harness plug is the same, only TCS cars have 2 extra wires going to positions on the plug that are empty on a non-TCS car. Putting a TCS rear in a non-TCS car will result in only the left rear sensor supplying the input to the ABS computer. After examining the wiring diagrams I believe ABS will continue to function but I'll let you know tomorrow once I attempt to install mine. ;)

Thanks for all the info, it's the axle bearings that need to be replaced. I guess I'm in for a days worth, but worth it. Not gonna be much to do without power anyways. Thanks again everyone!

Hey all, im new to the board, and i was gonna lurk a bit more, but i have a chance to upgrade my rear end to a 2002 trans am rear, i have a 95 3.4 i figure its a direct replacement (aside from potential abs sensor problems) but since it was close to this current topic i figured id get some input, was there any difference between the camaro rear ends and the trans am rear ends? or are they all the same on the 4th gen f bodies? any input is appreceiated, sorry if this is redundant
