ahh, gears, one of my favorite topics.
first thing we need to do is dispell a few myths about gears.
1: they don't "kill" your top end
2: they don't "kill" your gas mileage
3: having "low end power" will not make a 3.42 out perform a 3.73 or 4.10 gear on teh same motor.

now that we have that out of the way lets get to the point. gearing and a good posi working together is a great way to knock soem serious time off your 0-60, 1/4 mile, and get a bit more pep around town.
gears are optimized when the car uses the full power band through every gear at the track. with the broad power band of a stock or mildyl modded 3.8 that really makes a 4.56 gear a great idea for the track, do you wanna live everyday with that gear, prolly not.
but a 3.73 or a 4.10 will give you a serious performance upgrade as well. if you have a 3.23 rear gear(the most common gears in 4th gens) you will see 3-5tenths come off of your 1/4 time by switching to the bigger gears.
3.42's are the most common gear only because of how common they are and how cheap they can be had second hand. the overlying fear of gear that is common all over also prevents a lot fo peopel from taking advantage of more serious gears.
if you are worried about your highway mileage are also being mislead. my old car i went from 2.73's to 3.54's and never lost anything on teh highway, around town was similar once i got over playing with my new acceleration away from every stop light
the moral of the story, GO GET GEARS!!!!!
need proof, look at the top of the n/a list, especially take note of what little g has done. he has a few mild bolt ons and a good set of gears and he is now runnign with head and cam cars.
