    Re: T-56 from 5 speed

the bolt patterns from bellhousing -> engine are identical.

i have a 3.8 manual bellhousing that came with the 2000 transmission that i bought to replace my worn out t5 in my 1994 3.4L Camaro. (i dont use it, the starter placing is on the wrong side, but i could if i wanted to...see images below)

    --------------------------------

fwiw - the 3rd gen 60* v6 fbodies used the "rectanguar" bellhousings until around 1989 / 1990 - when borg warner switched to a new case design, similar to Tremec and the tranny used in the mustang. the bellhousing/transmission case combo was used in all v6 fbodies from around 1989/1990 - 2002. including AFTER the time that tremec bought the specifications from borg-warner and became the transmission supplier for GM around 1996 (95? somewhere in there...)

As for the torque ratings. T5 torque ratings in the v6 are only 230 lb ft!. the v8's are 300 lb ft, and the t56 is somewhere around 350-450 depending on gear ratios.

if you get the trans that is being shown @ spohn and toss it into your 3.8 stock, you will lose acceleration due to the MASSIVE change in gearing.

the t5 in the v6, from 1986-2002 (yes, the gearing remained the same in the v6 for all those years) is as follows:

    t5 transmission
    tq rating: 230 lb. ft.
    GVW(lbs): 5,502
    1st gear: 3.75
    2nd gear: 2.19
    3rd gear: 1.41
    4th gear: 1.00
    5th gear: 0.72
    6th gear: N/A
    rev gear: 3.53

    t56 "spohn" transmission
    tq rating: 450 lb. ft.
GVW(lbs): not sure but based on tremec's site, around 3300 lbs
    1st gear: 2.97
    2nd gear: 1.94
    3rd gear: 1.35
    4th gear: 1.00
    5th gear: 0.84
    6th gear: 0.62
    rev gear: 3.28

basically if you just slap that tranny into your 3.8 you would bog a lot off the line - hardly the quick springy launch that a 3.75 gear will give you. in 1993 they had a "performance" close ratio transmission called the M28 in the Z28, 6 spd (t56) with a 3.35 first gearing and a torque rating of 350 lb ft.

p.s. - well that blows, i cant actually "attach" images here, just add them to the msg...meh. oh well.

set1.jpg = the two bellhousings side by side - with no change in aspect ratio. i simply took one image and put it next to the other. the images are the EXACT same ones that wolf has provided.

set2.jpg = one image placed over the top of the other, setting the visibility of each image at 65%, with red dots where the bolt holes line up and become clear. if the area of the image is clear and visible with no "ghosting" - then it is IDENTICAL and forming one complete image from the two images set at 65%. you can clearly see where the differences lie, such as the position of the starter and the pattern of the transmission=>bellhousing.

Here is a picture of an 80s 305/350 t-5 bellhousing. It is def not the same bellhousing to engine bolt pattern. But it seems like they send you a bellhousing to tranny adapter.

Sorry if you know all this, but I just dont want to see anyone waste alot of money.
you dont get a bellhousing with the t56 kit from spohn. the kit they offer is the EXACT SAME kit from Sallee Chevrolet - it comes with an adapter "plate". basically just a plate, with the bolt pattern of the 60* v6/305 v8 trans=>bellhousing mounting. you bolt the plate to the bellhousing, and then bolt the tranny to the plate, thus keeping your stock bellhousing.

hence the reason the transmission gets moved back 9". the ls1 driveshaft fits perfectly in any 3rd or 4th gen camaro or firebird, unless you move the whole transmission back 9"...

anyway --- on the 305 bellhousing being similar to the 3.8L one - are you sure that the bellhousing tried wasnt for a mustang? i only ask because all the pictures ive seen of a 305 look identical to the 350, and the 350 in no way mates to the 3.8. i havent seen a ford 305 tho, (302? whatever) so i dunno what the bellhousing from that looks like...

i dunno...dont really care. you can do the t56 swap if you just get the bellhousing from a 3rd gen 60* with the rectangular tranny bolting pattern, and then move your starter to the other side of your engine.

      problem solved :-p

With the extra 6th gear you could run 4.10's to make up for acceleration.

cool... if we can get a t56 to work with out cars... I'll juice the piss out of the 3.8L.

Exactly. Transmission gearing and rear end gearing go hand in hand.
