  • Gears in Tranny

So i did my search and i figured out that the gears in our stock tranny are as follows.
    3.75
    2.19
    1.41
    1.00
    .73
However when i plug that in with my tire size and everything else, it tells me that with my current 3.23s that my second gear should be going to 66 and 103 in 3rd. When in fact i can go more like 61 and 95 respectivly. The for fun i pluged 3.42s into the calculator and 62 and 97 pooped up. So the question is do i have the wrong gear ratios above, or did my car come with 3.42s?
All you with stock m5's what speed do you shift out of second and 3rd gears when you are at 6k rpm?

What RPM are you using to calculate those speeds?

Remember that the stock tach isn't the most accurate around....

do you have the gear caclulator?

I'll test it with hptuners... But I believe 3rd gear goes to 98ish I know I checked that for sure, to see if I should shift or not in the 1/4?

            i think redline is 5800rpms
although mine sometimes shifts around 2300-3000 depending on how much gas i give it.

I have a manual. Well the stock tach seems pretty accurate cause my redline was reset to 6k and when i hit 6k on the tach it hits the rev limiter. LOL.
But the mph that i gave you i know...i was going to do calculations based on what is above my speedo.

When you do the speedo speeds you have to wait for the needle to catch up, i dunno if youve noticed but sometimes if you punch it through a gear then just press in the clutch and coast in neutral the speedo will still go up a bit more. This is another reason I wanted them to make this a sticky http://www.camarov6.com/ubb/ultimate...;f=23;t=004207

Still seems a little off but if you are telling me that those are right, they are really close to what my tach and speedo tell me and i know that those are inaccurate, so i will believe those numbers.

Why not just rotate the tire and count the rotations of the driveshaft. If it is posi, put the car in neutral, then jack up the rear and rotate one tire 360 degrees (one full rotation) and count the rotations of the driveshaft. 3.23 will be a little less than 3 1/4 turns of the drivehshaft, 3.42 will be almost 3 1/2 turns.

If it is not posi, jack up one rear wheel and rotate it for two full rotations and count the driveshaft rotations.

Why is that weird? They are 4.10:1 gears instead of 3.08:1 gears. Naturally they would turn more.
