• M5 People - Shifting Into Reverse :)

In many FWD cars it helps tremendously to shift into 2nd gear before going into reverse.

MTMike helped me out with this and I just thought I'd post that in our RWD T-5's you can shift into reverse without ever grinding a dog tooth off by shifting into 5th, waiting a second with the clutch depressed, and then pulling it back into 1st. It stops the syncro's and really makes shifting into reverse a breeze.

Just a little FYI

it really doesn't matter which gear just any forward gear will stop it from grinding.

well I have also found that sometimes I try to put it in reverse and it just won't go.. not grinding just doesn't go... so I usually drop it into second... ease off the clutch just a hair.. depress clutch drop it into reverse and go..

my reverse always grinds jus a little finesse works i find sometimes its a ***** to get it in. torque the throttle a bit and it drops right in but i always announce it to 5th then drop it down into reverse, the same for first i like to announce 2nd then up into first its alot easier on my tranny.

yeah...any forward gear to reverse stops whatever's grinding from moving, causing the grind.
however, if you want to save your gears even more...you can just put the clutch in, and let whatever's moving stop...and no grindy

It only grinds because reverse is spinning backwards and isn't a syncro gear - sucks. I wish they gave us syncro reverses!

I've not been able to use any forward gear, only 5th works for me - so thats why I recommend it.

Sorry to hear all that grinding everyone, maybe you guys won't gind your dog teeth so much now eh?

Put me into the '5th to reverse working just fine' group too....then again, I did just have my 5th gear synchro go out. Hmmmm....wonder if there's any relation there.

if reverse had a synchro...if you missed a 4th gear shift too far down to the right...you'd lose your tranny. reverse doesn't have a synchro for a reason. hold the clutch in for about 3 seconds...then try to shift into reverse without touching any other gear. no grind. been done, tried and tru.
