  • Transmission knocking, mount?

I have a 94 v6 automatic and for a while now i've noticed that my transmission makes a loud clunk when it shifts into I guess 3rd or 4th gear maybe?? Its usually on a highway or faster road, the car shifts into the gear with a loud clunk, then kind of rides a little rough and the rpms are kind of high, then if I press down more on the gas, it goes out of the gear into I guess the final gear and rides smoothly again and the RPMs go down to normal again.

I told my cousin cause he used to have a 95 z28, he said he had kind of a similar problem. He said that he had a small tranny leak too and all he did was buy a new mount for like $20.00 and unbolted the trans and put in the new mount and problem went away.

I don't have any leaks and it doesn't seem like the trans is slipping or anything. Everything else about the car seems to be riding fine, regular oil changes etc..

Its a 94 with 87,000 miles on it if that helps.

that could be a transmission mount, but if that was it the trans would clunk in 1-2, 2-3, etc. for the trans to slip i think points to something inside the valve body or the 'verter.

Another possibility since it clunks in 3rd or 4th gear only, that it is related to vehicle speed. A unbalanced driveshaft, failing universal joints, rear end, etc could cause this. Vehicle speed related noises can sometimes only occur at certain mphs. That is, it won't make the noise at 35 mph or 45 mph but will do it at 40 mph.

The only thing is, it does the clunk when it shifts. Its not really related to speed other then the relation to speed in the tranny having to switch gears.
