Carrier bearings

Do carrier bearings need to be pressed on with a shop press or is there another way to get them on and off. The ones on my SLP lsd came damaged so i need to put new ones on. Thanks

if you can find something that fits over the outside of the LSD and on the race part of the bearing to hammer it on get after it but otherwise let a shop press them on...

ok thanks, what about getting the damaged one off, other then just tearing it to peices?

Make sure you do this with a race that you don't plan on using. Using a hammer to install the bearings is a great way to put flat spots on the rollers and the race.

yea but you wouldnt actually be hammering on the rollers, why would the put a flat spot on them? I know you would have to be VERY careful while hammering and probally use a rubber mallet just to be safe. Also is there a trick to getting the exsisting carrier bearings off the diff with out one of those crazy gm tools?

With a rubber mallet, that may take a long time. Anytime you apply a shock force to the race, it can make flat spots on the rollers or race. That's why when the carrier is installed, it is to have no preload on it. If you really want to hammer them into place, find a large socket that is the same (or close to) diameter as the inside ring of the roller bearings frame. When you hammer it, make sure you apply no force to the outer ring or rollers of the bearing. To remove the bearings, you should be able to use a screw driver. Use a hammer to drive the screwdriver between the carrier and bearings and then slowly make your way around the surface of the bearing so it evenly comes off. It may take a while but that would be the best way to do it with the special GM tool.

ok cool thanks, looks like i will probally just take it to the machine shop and have it pressed on currectly to be on the safe side
