• SERIES 2 carrier Help IMMEDIATELY!!

ok, i am just about to buy a rear end out of a 95 Z28, but just found out that GU2 means it is a series 2 carrier with 2.73 gears. I can either
1.) not buy it or
2.) Buy it and put 3.42 or 3.73 gars in it (since i found out my 3.4 auto has 3.23's stock)Will the series 2 carrier be the same as a series 3? what are the differences. Will i see the same performance or gains if i just put the correct gears in the series 2 carrier. any other stuff i should be aware of. thanks in advance!!

Series 2 is not the same as Series 3. 3.23s, 3.42s, or 3.73s will not fit on a Series 2 carrier without modifications. Your best bet is to just skip it and look for a Series 3.

Actually they sell series 2 carrier gears, motive, richmond and intense sells them. my question is will the series 2 carrier with correct 2 gears have the same performance/ benefits as a series 3 carrier with correct gears.

yes, they are out there, and they are expensive.

they will give you similar performance to a 3 series carrier. the 3 series carrier is nothing special, just more common than a "performance" 2 series.

You are correct that they sell gears for Series 2, but you will probably have to buy them new...where as with Series 3 you could find a low mile set for cheaper.

You car doesn't really care what series it is, only what the ratio is. Series 3 are just cheaper.

So go for it and buy the gears on ebay for $100. This way i will have disc brakes, and a posi with better gears for cheaper than it would cost me to rebuild my rear with a posi and gears. So the series 2 carrier is ok, i mean they put it in the Z28's, i guess they are good right?

They put it in Z28s with the high gears. Which one do they use for performance gears? ;)

IMO, I'd get a Series 3 carrier. Any future gear swaps will be cheaper this way.

Motive says that the only sell series 3. But richmond and strange sell serise 2 gears all the way up to 4.10's. So it's really up to you. If you want to hold out for a 3 then do it, or if you have a good deal on a 2 and don't want to pass it up go for it

hmmm, so go for the posi w/ everything for $300, and throw in a $100 for gears, and be set. i think thats what i'll do because i have always wanted discs, and know that installing the 3 carrier into my existing will end up costing about the same neway.

I didn't realize you were gonna get the entire rear. If you an get the whole rear for $300, I'd get that. If you can find some Series 2 gears for 100 bucks, it sounds like a great deal.

gotta get them installed too... unless you're one of those types that have connections. free ones.

PERSONALLY... with the proliferation of 10 bolts out there with more desirable gear or carrier combinations, i would just save my $300 and hold out for what i really want. it's tough to do when it's right there for your taking, but worth it in the end.
