SERIES 2 carrier Help IMMEDIATELY!!

being a 2 series doesnt make much difference. here is what you are looking at though.

$200 for gears.
$100 for install/ rebuild kit (the rear end is 10 years old)
$300 for assembly from a knowledgeable individual

in a couple years, $300 for a new posi + install costs. Your getting a 10 year old auburn unit that hopefully isnt completely worn out yet, but probably will be if you keep you car for any period of time.

The price for the series 2 gears sets through precision gear is 216.00, not bad for a well made gearset. They would have all of the parts you need. [img]graemlins/rock.gif[/img]

In my humble opinion, you wouldnt be saving anything by buying a 10 year old rearend that doesnt have the gears you want, has an aging auburn posi (which are known to wear out leaving you with an open differential) and who knows what shape the axles are in.

I actually think it would be more cost effective to rebuild your own rear-end and later add in the disc brakes.

well, but to get discs on my existing drums, wouldn't it cost me more because of axles and brakes. What is needed for a brake swap, axles, and calipers, ebrake cable. Also, i know that this car has 34,000 miles on it, and is from ohio. it was a construction workers who totaled it here in the falls and have taken many parts off it. thanks for the input though. how much is an e-brake cable for discs? so it would have an aurburn posi in it? aren't they good?

The disc brake conversion is about $150, all parts sold as a kit from TA Creations. Calipers, rotors, mounting brackets and e-brake cable. axles are the same.
If your sure the car only has 34,000 miles on it and not 134,000 then I guess its more of a deal. I never would have thought a 10 year old car to have so few miles.
The auburn unit is good, but its common to find the guts of it worn out on the older ones with a lot of miles/ punishment and not function as a posi anymore.

I also bought a rear end from a 95 trans am. Now I know I should of waited becouse the gears in it are the 2.73 series 2, for $300 bucks and I wanted the bigger gears. Now I have to get some series 2 gears, which I regret buying now. Also why are the series 2 gears more expensive than the series 3???

WElL, i did a carfax on the car, it was determined totaled @ 34,764 miles. The diffy doesn't leak, barely has surface rust, disc brakes, and e-brake cable. Series 2 carrier. I got it for $275. I'm pretty happy. the rest of the car is mint, the paint is perfect, well where it wasn't smashed that is. there is absolutely no rust on undercarriage, leading me to beleive that it wasn't bet too hard, or that it wasn't driven too much! Thakns for your input, not its time to get either 3:73's or 3:42's, hmmmm!!!!

umm i think you would be better of finding a rear end with the 3.42 in it. you can get one from ta creations for 350 plus shipping, or find one on ebay..... i paid 320 shipped for mine. there rear was in better shape then mine ,and it was shiped with fluid. so i know it wasn't leaking lol

buying gears for a 2 series carrier is cheaper than buying a 3 series carrier plus gears...

Well, as we all know there are a million and one ways for doing/purchasing parts. I am glad and confident with my purchase. i know exactly how many miles are on my diffy, didn't have to pay for shipping,and know that it doesn't leak. The car was in great shape, therefore owner probably and i do say "probably" took good care of the car.
