Hello, I did a search through the posts and got mixed results..
what is the benefit for changing gears? I have a stock 96 camaro A4(w/o LSD)what gears do i currently have? what would be better? How much does that change cost (on average)?? and how much is it to get LSD installed? What would the benefit of that be? PLMK cuz i have a bunch of tax-refund money to spend! thanks in advance

You either have 3.08 or 3.42 unless you have the sport performance pkg. with 3.23's. The lsd will help in off the line traction and lower tire wear, kinda. mainly a decrease in 1/4 times, 60 ft. times, 0-60 times, and it just cool to brag about.

Most people change their gears to 3.42s to break into the 14s on their 1/4. It'll improve your 0-60.

3.08 Gears

What would be better?
3.42 Gears

How much does that change cost (on average)??
If you don't install it yourself, i've heard mixed opinions on installing it, some say it's a pain the *** some say it was pretty simple. I'd probably say a shop would do it for you for $200 on both the gears and lsd

And how much is it to get LSD installed?
Usually a shop will install them both for you for the same price. Like they'd probably just put in the LSD for you if you were getting your gears changed for the same charge as just getting your gears changed.

What would the benefit of that be?
LSD, you will be able to burn both tires opposed to just one. It will help you launch better, etc. You should install the LSD when you do the gears because if you want it later on your gonna have to back track.

Hope I Could Help,
Ted

I prefer 3.73's because you really feel it off the line. Installation is around 300 to 350. 3.42's are still sweet gears if going from 3.08. They are the more common gears people have.

check salvage yards, there are businesses that sell them (for a premium), and check out the for sale sections on some boards. i know a while back there was someone here selling 3.42's for $30 or something. they can range anywhere from that to over $300, depending on where you get them. the lsd, you can get from slp, last i looked that had it on sale for $85. or you could try to find that used too.

as far as what gears to go to, the higher you go numerically, the worse your gas mileage gets, but the lower you et goes. top speed is killed as well. most people go with 3.42 because it gives a nice compromise between mileage and take-off. not leaning too much towards one or the other. others would rather have lower et and forget about the gas mileage. it's a personal choice, and it depends on the frequency of your driving, your driving habits, and what you want out of your car.
as far as lsd, every car should have it. having one wheel spinning in a burn out just plain sucks
you can\'t get off if you don\'t get on
