  • Bad News :(

Well i just got back from the transmission shop with some really bad news. My transmission started running funy after i flushed the atf so i broguh it in and he told me a basicly need a tranny rebuild. he showed me all the different things he will be replacing and why but it seemed like another language to me. The trans was rebuilt before i boguht the car and i never knew and he told me it was rebuilt very badly. I mean i know some stuff but almost all of what i know i get from this site. Anyway the total cost is going to be about $2,000.00 and then another 200 for my rear end that i am getting new bearing for. I'm pretty pissed but i guess it will be better in the long run. He is going to make my shifts very firm and replace a lot of it with better parts but is there anything i should ask for while he's doing it? Also does this sound like a fair price for the task at hand? I plan on just gettin nitrous in the future but i want my new trans to be able to handle what i can give it. Thanks and sorry so long

Why don't you buy a used 4l60e off Ebay. It should be much cheaper. Use the extra money on mods.

yep i got same price on my head. but i talked to my mechanic and he said he just replaced one on a Vette, so he said he could get my performance tranny for $1100 and then $500 labor.. so lil better than the shops price, i need a new torque converter.. what u guys think i should go with thats not too bad on city and highway driving. Like whats stock? i was thinkin bout a 2500 stall or something.

just get a used one. 2K is a lot to dump into getting a tranny back to 'slighty better' than stock performance. 4L60E's were used in a ton of GM cars, like S10's and everything like that. Look on ebay, tacreations.com, anywhere.

The only question i have about a used one is that how do i know i wont need a rebuild with the new (used) one that i purchase?

Do a search for 4l60e on ebay. they are selling em for 600-900 dollas. heres one for a C5 Corvette for under 900 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...929138121&rd=1

a 4L60E from a v8 isnt going to bolt up to our 3.8L. that makes it a little harder.

I just got done with the same thing as you. I looked around a bit for a used tranny, but with prices of used trannies and shipping combined, I decided to spend the extra and do a rebuild.

Check out www.lt1dave.com to get an idea of the parts you want to put into it. you can also buy a full rebuild package and take to him and pay him just for the labor (he'll upcharge you for the parts).

KDSperformance.com also has some really good rebuild kits, and I think they're relatively inexpensive also. check them out.

Well I am going with this guys rebuild because my dad and I talked to him and worked things out. I told him what I wanted and what he's going to do is:
                      *keep the 13 vane pump
                      *Extra wide kevlar band
                      *Kevlar clutches
                      *29 Element Sprag
                      *Corvette Servo
                      *"The Beast" sunshell
                      *custom shift kit
*some other stuff i forgot about (lol sorry)

He also just finished the rear end because it needed new spider gears and carrier bearings. The rear end alone with labor cost me 500.00 and the trans is going to cost me 1900 for the rebuild so the total comes to $2400.00. I really hope I am not getting screwed but I think it sounds pretty fair for all the upgraded stuff I am getting. I'm going to get the car back on Friday so I'll let everyone know how it is. Thanks for all the help
