• LSD: Take-Off or not Take-Off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I already ordered Motive 3.42 Gears from ThunderRacing and now I want to buy the LSD. Even though many people has recomended the SLP Take-Off (which I believe is a Zexel-Torsen) I am still not sure about it because I never like to buy used stuff; especially becuase you never really know what you are getting. But when I see the price of the SLP take-off ($ 99.95) and I see the price of the Auburn Pro Series($429.95 at www.racenet.net) even I think about buying the SLP take-off. Here are my questions: What is the difference between those two? Would they both give the same performance gain? Is the Aurburn worth the extra $329.00? Which one would you all recomend regardless of the price?
Thanks again for any info.

Take-off from 93-97 LT1: Auburn (garbage)
Take-off from 98-02 LS1: Zexel-Torsen (fine)
Auburn Pro Series: $350+

The Zexel-Torsen is great. We have them in both of our cars. I used to have the Auburn LT1 take-off and it simply didn't work... still did one-tire burnouts and launches were questionable.

A take-off is not a used part. It is literally taken off the Z28/Trans Am by SLP before they are converted into a SS/WS6. It can be considered used but it has zero miles on it.

Unless you are pushing ungodly torque, a Zexel-Torsen will be fine for a V6 application.

i have the slp t/o. I HIGHLY recommend it. works incredible. the Auburn is a different type of setup using a series of clutches instead of the spider gears the torsion unit has, which achieves simialer results. the $430 unit is built to take more horsepower but has parts that will wear over time and stress, but the Z/T SLP unit is a tough little bugger and your not going to wear it out... the only way you will break it is to put too much power to it and grenade the gears inside it. I'd definately go with the SLP T/O

Get your order in for the SLP $100 one before it's too late! It's the stock LSD, but it's enough unless you're doing serious (and not just an exhaust, etc.) mods.

Any other info before I go ahead and order the LSD tonight?. Thanks for all the help.

p.s. Just out of curiosity. What does SLP use to replace the Zexel-Torsen from the Z28 and Trans Am?

I wouldn't call the Auburn garbage, but it sounds like the used one you have was worn out. They do not have an infinite life and it simply needed to be rebuilt. I have a used Auburn in mine, with a take off Zexel in the basement waiting to go in with a new rear end. I figured the Auburn would have gone dead by now, but a year later it is still fine.

The Zexel-Torsen will not spin both tires in ALL circumstances. It balances power to the wheel that needs it the most. If you have one tire in the snow, and the other tire on asphalt,,only the tire in the snow will spin. During launches, one tire may spin for the first second, and then the other will spin.

If you're getting this to make 2 tire marks and donuts..then you don't need to worry. It will meet your expectations.

Other posi units make both tires spin, no matter what the condition. That's not always a good thing though.

Take off SLP. Theres nothing to wear down or damage in the short time its actually in a car before they pop it out and send it off. You wont break it anytime soon.

Ok. I ordered both the gears and the LSD. Now, before I install them I have a question about the speedo recalibration. Which is the best speedo recalibration system I can use? And how hard are those things to use? I am also installing a CAI and a 160º thermostat. Is there anything else I need to reprogram besides the speedo?
Thanks once again for all your help.

Compared to the Zexel-Torsen or the Auburn Pro, yes. The 93-97 Auburn base unit was just not very strong nor reliable... this is one of the reasons 98+ is such a great year to swap parts from.

Auburn Pro. ;) SLP Part # 10191, they sell it for $499. It is listed under Camaro SS and Firehawk OEM replacement parts, though it goes in the WS6 too.

SLP used to offer some other differential that was one step up from the Auburn Pro but it was an option for like $800 more... which would imply that the differential itself ran $1200. Not needed. If you're putting out enough power to blast a Zexel-Torsen or an Auburn Pro, you need a 12-bolt rear.

since you have a 2002 your best bet for calibration is to either buy a hypertech unit or get in on the group purchase for pcm programming. a little more than the Jet or SLP module, but a whole lot more value.
