What to do after a Gear and LSD install??

Well, as many of you may already know (since I have been all over the forum for the past few days asking questions about Gears and LSD's) I purchased 3.42 Gears and a SLP take-off LSD. Now I believe I will need to recalibrate my speedo and who knows what else. I was told to go to the tbyrne group purchase but I missed it. Now, I am gonna need some help deciding what I should use to recalibrate my speedo since I have no experience whatsoever doing these things. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

p.s. The following will be installed in my car next weekend: 3.42 Gears, SLP take-off LSD, 160º thermostat, CAI (still trying to decide what to buy), and 150 MPH gauge (still looking for one, hopefully I will find one soon). Thanks once again.

did you get an install kit for your gears too? You'll need the bearings and shims that the install kit has, along with a reluctator ring to keep your ABS active. I bought mine from TSP yesterday for $120 for both.
Other options for recalibrating are SLP recalibrator and the Tech-edge one from ZZP. In my area there are also a lot of mechanics that will do speedo recalibrations for like $50, that's what I plan on doing for my car.

would the Ratech contain that reluctator ring? I bought the Complete Kit: Includes pinion shims, carrier shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, and pinion & carrier bearings.

Yes. The Ratech complete kit is just that--complete. [img]smile.gif[/img]

yes, it is a full rebuild kit, but reluctor ring is not part of it. the SLP reluctor ring is under $20 at ammperformance.... thats where I got mine.

Will this kit work for a '99? i went to the ratech site and nothing was listed for anything newer than a 96 (note the guy installin all this has an '02 bird)

Yeah, the kit isn't going to include the reluctator ring. Most of the sponsors I believe can order it for you though. TSP said they'd get it for me for $!7.50, not a bad price. I'm pretty sure most of the other distributors can easily get it too. You could probably also order it from your local GM dealer, I think they could special order it also. Basically that ring just makes it so your ABS is still actice; if you didnt have it your gears would work just fine, you just wouldnt have ABS. I preferred to keep mine since it's a daily driver, but it's all preference and comfort levels with that. Oh yeah, it will fit a 99 also. I think all the rear ends from 93-02 are interchangeable, espcially since you've got disc brakes from the factory, it's the same rear end in all those years.

All fourth gen differentials/gears are interchangeable. Gears from a 93 V8 will work fine on an 02 V6, vice versa, etc.

I try not to post when I'm not absolutely certain about something but I'm making an exception here...

I have swapped my gears four times (stock 3.23 to 3.73, 3.73 to 3.42, 3.42 to 2.73, 2.73 to 3.42) and I have never needed a new ABS relocator ring. I just now looked over the shop invoices for all four swaps and I don't see any reference to this part. Two of the swaps did not require the shop to purchase any parts at all--to my knowledge. I'm going to call the shop tomorrow to verify this... but I'm fairly certain that they just used the old one every time. They could have bought one without me knowing (which is why I'm going to check) but I don't think they did. A part for $17.50 would likely have been noted on the invoices.

And yes, my ABS works fine.

I *think* it only needs to be changed when your changing what series your gears are. Since most of yours were 3-series, they could re-use it. Were your 2.73's one of those shimmed gears that still fit with a 3-series carrier? That's probably why they could reuse it. Since 3.08's are still 2-series, I think they have to change it. But I'd definately be interested in hearing the response to that too Stefan. If I could reuse mine too that'd be rocking.
