  • TC or Tranny Part 2- Help fast please

Ok I dropped it by a shop today for a free checkup. They feel that the ticking (tho they admit is coming from the Bellhousing) and the fact that it won't shift until 30 mph means it is the tranny....before I drop $300 for them to look in the tranny (remember I just lost my job) does anyone have any ideas?

Actually, I think it's still the TC. The TC spins the oil pump and if there is something wrong with the TC, it will not generate proper line pressure to operate the trans. The TC is actually 2 halves. The front half of the case is bolt to the flexplate and the second half is connected to the input shaft of the trans. On the inside of the shells, each half is lined with fins. When the front half of the TC spins, the fins push tranny fluid against the fins of the second half. That is how power is transferred through the TC. There is a lot of stuff in the TC that can go wrong. Either way, something is wrong with your car. $300 seems like a lot just to find out what is wrong.

I just got off the phone with the tranny shop and they say that TCs "Don't tick." He is convinced that it is the tranny....now I am not sure I can trust him to tell me the whole truth. He also said my tranny fluid is a little "varnished" and it has about 2K miles on it...

I am really in a tight spot here....any suggestions are welcomed (as are donations at this point)

There is no way of knowing unless it is removed and inspected. I have heard TCs and flexplates tick before, that's nothing new. If you have the ability to remove the trans yourself, I would do that. I would also shop around. $300 is way too much money to look at a problem when it sounds like they don't know what the problem is.

Just out of curiosity, how long after you changed the trans fluid did you notice the ticking noise?

I changed the tranny fluid in October and did not hear any ticking. I drove to FL and noticed some hesitation under hard acceleration (I had experienced it before at high rpms). I got home and in Nov/Dec my headgasket went and cracked the heads...it was cheaper to buy a remanufactured engine, that was installed and I thought the ticking was a lifter and the company asked that I wait until 1K miles...that is when I brought it in and I got the guess as to the problem....the hesitation started getting bad recently as the weather got colder. About the time my engine was swapped I saw a dramatic drop in gas mileage....

I drove the car home from the tranny shop and had hesitation under hard acceleration, I could not hear ticking, but it was raining....the car shifts at 10-20 mph and then again at 30-40...shifting does not seem to be the issue, it is the ticking and hesitation/drag.

Before the last time you changed your tranny fluid, how long ago was the fluid changed? And this maybe a thought but since you didn't notice any problems until after you had the motor swapped, was the mechanic(s) experienced? There's always the chance that they messed up the TC/tranny during the R&R.

The tranny fluid was prob 5-10K miles old...the people who did the engine swap, that is all they do. They remanufacture engines (ship nationwide) and have a shop that only does the swaps. I hope they were experienced.

                          Here is the final word....

New TC AND the clutches in my tranny were falling apart.....I guess 130K does put some strain on a tranny....the regular fluid changes did some good, only the things that wear out wore out....

BTW, the tapping was the crankshaft....the engine builder has the car now.
