Normally I would agree with what you just said, but a new Zexel Torsen take-off IS only 95 dollars...and that really isnt THAT much to have piece of mind that you're not getting a hunk of crap.

Regarding used parts in general, that's an opinion issue. Some people (myself included) say if you're going to bother "upgrading" or "modifying" your car, do it right or don't bother. Others say do what you can afford. Obviously there's a market for used parts, otherwise online For Sale forums wouldn't exist. [img]smile.gif[/img] But given the extreme stress that ultra-modified cars endure, used parts are not a wise policy if you're planning on heavy high performance.
there doesnt necessarily have to be a reason for getting rid of the part like most people are assuming. people that have whatever car and upgrade them will sometimes take off what they upgrade when they decide to sell the car. the previous owner did that with mine and i bought the stuff that was upgraded back from him because he wanted to make some of the money back for what he originally paid. not saying that this is the issue in this case, but it doesnt necessarily mean anything is wrong with the part but there is some wear and tear on it. you may want to find out why he is selling and make a judgement from there.
if the price difference between the used part that you can get a deal on and a brand new one is not a huge difference, i would buy the new. always better to buy new because you know that it hasnt been run through the ringer.

lsd unit is the carrier. you will need gears, rebuild kit, and ABS reluctor ring.... and a person to do the install who knows what he is doing or else they'll whine and wear out quickly and put you back at the drawing board.

The Sandman--something else dawned on me just now, don't know why the heck I didn't think of this earlier.
You can't use that limited slip differential right now with your 3.08 gears. 3.08 and lower gears use a 2-series differential, 3.23 and higher use a 3-series. That differential is off a car with 3.42's which means it is a 3-series. In order to use it, you must install 3.23 or higher gears.
If you were to go all the way and go for 3.42's, you would need:
3.42 gears themselves - $189.99 for the Motive Gear set from Thunder
Ratech Complete Gear Install Kit - $89.95 from Thunder
3-series ABS Reluctor ring - $20 SLP part number 26029, only needed if going from a 2-series carrier to a 3-series carrier. This is actually a GM part but SLP now markets it and I can't seem to find the GM part number. LMPerformance and Texas Speed sells it, or any GM dealership.
Finally, you will need 2 quarts of either Mobil 1 or Redline 75W90 synthetic gear oil and 1 bottle of GM limited slip additive. You can get both from Thunder.
You already have the differential.
Besides, even if you could use that differential, installing a limited slip differential on a 3.08 car is a waste of time. Get the gears and make it worthwhile.
Just an FYI, we have a handful of the take-off LSD's in stock, and on our Everything SLP Special, they are $89.99:) And we do have the reluctor ring for $17.50, and of course gears from SLP are on special as well:)

Keep in mind too that when you exchange 3.08 gears for 3.42's(or any other ratio), your speedo/odometer will no longer read correctly, so you'll likely want to add some $$ to deal with that whether it be buying a recalibrator if you can, having your pcm flashed at a dealer or getting a programmed PCM off a Y87 car.

Yeah - thanks for the replies. Also, I know I'd have to get new gears, and the speedo recalibrated. I didn't know I'd have to get an ABS ring and an install kit. Sounds like it'd be cheaper just to buy a rear axle :(
