How much should I pay for backlash adjustment?

My have been whining for almost a year, but more recently they have gotten noisier. Now, when I coast to a stop, you can alomst hear them eating away at each other (the ring and pinion).

First off, can this be fixed if I have my backlash set properly? (I dont think it was done right the first time). If so, how much should I expect to pay a shop for this to be done?

Or, does this horrible grinding sound mean that I will need new gears?

if you let it go for that long yu may need new gears, but you never know till you opne up your rear and see
