i was driving on the interstate today and i inavoidably hit a tire that had blown off a truck...i pulled off at the exit and put the car in park to make sure the tire didnt dent or scratch the car (or anyhting else) and when i put it in park it just rolled back....sucks a$s...none of the gears are staying in right...it stays in drive, but theres a LOT of play in the shifter...what the hell do you think happened?

My old Z24 cavalier (which I miss alot) did that, it had a LOT of play, like sometimes I would have the lever in D and the trans is in N, That only would happen anytime it was cold out
Anyway, do you park on a steep hill or driveway with just the car in park? If so then it probibly just stretched the shift linkage.
It is not a big deal, just something that happens after time.~chris~ 98 Cayenne red Camaro 3800 A4, 3:08, T tops Borla cat-back, wisper lid K&N, Bilstine shocks, Dunlops all around.
AOL IM: chevyboyz24

Kinda off the main subject...but...Why are trucks allowed to re tread their tires and just have the re treaded sections fly off and end up wherever they want to end up. If Im ever driving and run over one of them...regardless if my car is damaged or not I would write a letter to congress. Its ridiculous that they are allowed to leave their rubber on the road. I smell a tire tread lawsuit in the near future.1993 3.4
Borla rear section
3 inch Catco High Flow Cat
2.75 inch I pipe (Picked one up from an LT-1 guy for a whole $10)
K&N Fipk
180° T-stat
Jet Stage II
10 Spoke Z28 Wheels
NGK\'s, Taylor Spiros
Mobil 1 synthetic
Email Viper2@chesnet.net for 4th gen replacement parts.

To answer your queston thats off the subject, all those treads you see aren't always retreads. I have seen many a tire come apart like that brand new. If you don't believe me, just let most of the air out of your tire and drive on the freeway. Thats usually what it is. The sidewall is weak and gets hot. ANyways this is going into handling, so to the original question, maybe a tranny mount came loose?1997 Chevrolet Camaro v6 - 13.8@104MPH

Just a side note: retreads are not allowed anymore. (but the law is rarely enforced)
The tires often come "unglued" because of excess pressure and heavy loads. Not surprisingly, a large part of the problem is speeding. Their tires have ratings just like ours, and if you push the limits of those ratings for extended periods of time, you're bound to have failures.
I'ts a crime that truckers aren't held responsible for their irresponsible driving habits, while we six-bangers are prosecuted for having a little joy ride.
Around here (Indiana/Illinois border) there is a lot of industry and as a result, a lot of semi traffic. The truckers speed and run red lights like it's going out of style, and I actually had a state trooper friend of mine say that they are discouraged from stopping or ticketing semis. The reason was unclear, but he said the tickets they write don't even count towards their "quota." So it's a waste of time to pull them over.
It's a sin and I for one am sick of it. I cheered like crazy during the first semi robbery scene in the Fast and the Furious. I'm sure most of you feel the same... I just needed to vent.
Pikey: I would almost guarantee it's a stretched cable. If not, try to determine what gears exactly are affected, and report back. I've seen a similar problem with a broken linkage.
Good luck!

first off.. I'd check the linkage.. you might be able to re-adjust it, either at the tranny or at the shifter... ok.. I gave tech advise.. now I'm going to jump in on that other discussion..
being that I have been around trucks since I was quite young I have a bit of an understanding.. truck drivers and trucking companies are just like any other profession. there are good ones and bad ones. People on this board complain about the police, when that happens our members who are in law enforcment jump in so I don't think I am out of line here. But guys it's just like anything else there are truck drivers that are professionals and do their best to always do the right thing, just men and women out trying to make a living. Then there are those that feel since their vehicle is bigger than anything else on the road they own it. Like any other profession in the public eye, we always focus on the bad and forget about the good.-Brad
