When i dont let my car warm up in the morning the tranny shifts hard (the car shutters bad) into all gears. The strange thing is if i let my car warm up for about ten min. it shifts fine or if its cold it shifts fine a wot. The only thing i can think of is that the torque converter will not unlock when shifting. Do you guys have any ideas of what the problem could be and how to fix it?

Re: a4 shifting hard
i doubt that is a p1870, generally when it starts shifting hard it will illuminate the ses, and it shifts hard after it gets hot, not when its cold. i guess anything is possible, i just have my doubts that its a p1870, take it to a tranny shop and get a quote is all i can tell you...

Re: a4 shifting hard
I think i will fluch the tranny for now and see if that helps. I will not have a chance to bring it to a shop i trust for a few weeks anyway. Thanks for the quick replys. Does the 4L60E have brass fittings in it? maybe some brass is in a pressure switch somewhere.1998 green camaro, bear rotors.
It\'s not how much money you have, It\'s how many toys you have.

Re: a4 shifting hard
My last car would shift hard when it needed a fluid change. I would agree with doing a fluid change/flush first to see if that fixes it. Unless you've neglected to ever change the fluid and have high miles. Then you may be asking for trouble.2002 Silver Firebird A4
T-Tops, Leather, Y87, W68, Chrome Wheels
Bone Stock

Re: a4 shifting hard
P1870 is the Transmission Component Slipping DTC and is usually accompanied with high transmission temperatures (friction from slipping components) and harsh 1-2 shift.
When cold the RPMs at which the shifts occur at are moved higher (programmed in the PCM) to avoid engine stumbling, hesitations, surges, etc.... If it shifts exceptionally harsh when cold I would suspect (and start with) the pressure control solenoid, and also the Transmission Flulid Temperature sensor (because in certain conditions this modifies the pressure based on temperature)
I'm not a tranny guy, but I'm sure someone who is will have all sorts of better ideas.
